Curiosity’s Descent onto Mars (in HD)

August 23rd, 2012 | Space

In case you missed it, NASA landed a new rover by the name of Curiosity onto the surface of Mars back on August 6th. Daniel Fitch, of YouTube, recently compiled a set of High-definition images taken by the Mars Descent Imager to make the video seen above.

At first, you see the heat shield being ejected toward the surface.  Once the shield is gone, the rover’s radar is revealed to calculate the right speed and direction of descent which can be controlled with its jetpacks.

Now, we just have to sit back and let the rover roam the Red Planet and try to achieve its 4 goals:

Goal 1: Determine whether life ever arose on Mars

Goal 2: Characterize the climate of Mars

Goal 3: Characterize the geology of Mars

Goal 4: Prepare for human exploration

I’m most excited about Goals 1 & 4.  Send Humans!

‘Feel Flows’ by Slow Magic

August 20th, 2012 | Space

Slow Magic is the neon animal-masked figure above that has an 8-track album by the name of  ▲.  I’m really a big fan of the 80’s synth and choral wailings in ‘Feel Flows’.  It’s my kind of dreamwave music and hopefully, a good song to help wind down your summer.

You can pick up the album from their bandcamp page here.

Travel to Distant Worlds

The illustrations above are by Karl Gilzen from the Russian book, Travel to Distant Worlds.  It was originally published during the late 1950’s, during an era of heightened imagination toward space exploration.

I was drawn to the images because of their gritty, subdued style, which stands apart from many of the vintage space images of the period.

It’s fascinating to look back through the decades to see how we envisioned the future.

I’m sure the authors imagined that Russia would probably have cosmonauts on every planet by now.  Hopefully we can get some of that excitement back!  I’m expecting to live in space at some point in my life…

Auroville

July 18th, 2012 | Space

Auroville is an idealistic, experimental city located in the Tamil Nadu state of Southern India. It was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (also known as “The Mother”) and designed by architect Roger Anger.

Here is the Auroville Charter:

1. Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But to live in Auroville, one must be the willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.

2. Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.

3. Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.

4. Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual Human Unity.
The writings of these visionaries, and the specific guidelines for Auroville given by the Mother are crucial for in-depth understanding of what is trying to be achieved in Auroville, a collective experiment dedicated to human unity and international understanding.

When I first saw the pictures of this place, I couldn’t believe it was real.  The symmetry of the design is absolutely stunning.  It’s reminiscent of crop circles, and I assume this is why it feels like an alien design.

Neil deGrasse Tyson on Scientific Literacy

Scientific Literacy

In the video above, Neil deGrasse Tyson argues an important point that I very much agree with — everyone should become literate in science!  Not just scientists, but everyone!

Even if you devote your life to 16th century French Literature, you should still be able to attain a basic scientific literacy to interact in this world.

Furthermore, it’s extremely important that every politician have at least some basic understanding of scientific principals.  In today’s ever-advancing technological society, it would be irresponsible to regulate national policy without understanding what is going on in the world.

Anyway, hopefully this site helps out in this effort at least a little bit.

737 Flight Simulation

July 9th, 2012 | Space

Check out this Boeing 737  flight simulator from the simINN Flight Simulation Center in Stuttgart, Germany — designed by Frankfurt-based architect Boris Banozic.

The location has full-size simulators of a boeing 737 and a learjet 45x on site.  The cockpits also come with impressive 230-degree projection displays.

The aim of Banozic’s design was to create a dynamic and abstract scenery of an airport runway.

And apparently, you can drink and fly.

I didn’t really expect a fully functional flight simulator to be accompanied by contemporary interior design, but the result is pretty cool.  If I ever learn to fly, I’ll be heading to Stuttgart.
