Animal Astronauts

April 18th, 2012 | Space

My friend Neil (not Armstrong) sent me these fanciful prints of Animal Astronauts by the artist going by the name of Rubbishmonkey.  I think personifying animals is something we can all appreciate.

It’s great to imagine how each of these animals might act in space – which natural animal instincts would carry over.

The Gorilla – Stern and Powerful

The Deer – Smart and Quick

The Cosmonaut K9 – Loyal and Courageous

The Tiger – Cunning and Stealthy

I personally hope the future involves some sort of technology that gives animals human-level intelligence.

Mars Travel Posters

April 8th, 2012 | Space

Check out these Mars Travel Posters from Ron Guyatt.  They feature 3 landmarks: the Seven Sisters caves on Arsia Mons, the volcano Olympus Mons, and the Valles Marineris.

They are apparently part of a series depicting landmarks in our solar system, so hopefully we’ll get to see some more in the coming months.

The Boy Who Played With Fusion

April 6th, 2012 | Space

Boy Fusion

Read this article on Taylor Wilson, The Boy Who Played With Fusion.  It is awesome!  I have always been a big fan of stories of incredible genious.  I find them inspiring.  They make me want to be a better scientist and do something great some day.

In summary, the article describes Taylor’s story to become the youngest person in the world (age 14) to achieve nuclear fusion.  His parents play an interesting role in this development and certainly exhibit a laissez faire parenting style.  I can’t help but think this could just have easily turned into a national news story of tragedy.

Anyway, hope you like it!

The Paintings of Pavel Tchelitchew

March 29th, 2012 | Brain, Space

Russian-born Pavel Tchelitchew (1898-1957) created most of these surrealist paintings toward the end of his distinguished career.  Tchelitchew was influenced by cubism and constructivism, but he reacted against the cones and cubes and began working in curves, a decision that led to his representational style, which used every traditional device of anatomy and perspective.

Tchelitchew was also known for his predilection for outrageous blues and pinks, calling himself the “Prince of Bad Taste.

”  Maybe this is why his paintings have an 80’s feel to me — the lines look like lasers!

Earth’s Flag & Beyond

March 26th, 2012 | Space

2020 - Earth's Flag

For some reason, creating a flag for Earth never really occurred to me, but it’s a great idea.  Reddit user thefrek made this series of flags for present-day Earth and also for our inevitable expansion – for the next 800 years!  I can support the white and blue world colors.  They seem appropriate.

Click on the images to get a description of the flag.

If anyone is inspired to create their own version of Earth’s flag, send it in, and we’ll post it.
