Ruben Brulat discovered the most striking landscapes in the world for his two photography series, Paths & Primates.  The images feature abandoned people in countries such as Mongolia, Iraq, the Phillipines, Nepal, and Indonesia. By inserting human strife, the scenes evolve from beautiful terrain into compelling drama, and the scale of the people in the photographs emphasizes the power of nature against us.

This personal project was conducted over the last two years, and incredibly, Brulat only traveled by land!  He apparently picked up locals along the way to help find the scenes and take the photographs.

Amazing…

The Saturn Rose

Saturn Rose

The Saturn Rose

Located directly over Saturn’s North Pole is a GIANT hurricane measuring around 1,250 miles  (2,000 kilometers) across with cloud speeds reaching 330 mph (150 m/s).  That is about 20 times bigger than the average hurricane here on Earth!  Another interesting difference is that it doesn’t seem to move around at all.  NASA stated that “the hurricane swirls inside a large, mysterious, six-sided weather pattern known as The Hexagon.”   They went on to say that it has likely been spinning in the same location for years, but no one really knows why…

The image above was shot from the Cassini spacecraft which has been cruising around Saturn taking photos of the planet and its moons since 2004.  The hurricane has apparently been obscured by a long winter in the north pole, but the seasons have shifted, and we have recently gained enough light to see the beast in all its glory.

Here’s how the image was taken:

“The images were taken with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Nov. 27, 2012, using a combination of spectral filters sensitive to wavelengths of near-infrared light.

The images filtered at 728 nanometers are projected as green, and images filtered at 752 nanometers are projected as red. In this scheme, red indicates low clouds and green indicates high ones.”

In other words, they used false colors to show low clouds in red versus high clouds in green.  What an amazing solar system we have…

Magnetic Putty

When you add small magnetic particles to silly putty, it’s transformed into a metal eating alien life-form. PBS Digital Studios and Shanks FX used the magnetic putty in parts of their recent film short SCI-FLY, and and the shots are pretty fantastic.

They recently released a new video showing the whole process in reverse and it’s really interesting to see how the experience changes.  I’ve been seeing a lot of the video comments describing these videos as a sexual experience, which I think is hilarious.  Maybe there are some silly putty fetishes out there?

Here’s a description of the material that was used in the video:

“Magnetic Attractor Putty is a non-Newtonian solid. This means that while the putty is technically a solid, it exhibits qualities of a liquid as well. Just let your putty sit on a flat surface for a while and you’ll see it spread out like a liquid. The magnetic properties of the Magnetic Attractor Putty come from a magnetic material being mixed in with the putty itself. There are millions of tiny micron-sized magnets embedded in the putty to ensure that it will respond to any large magnet.”

They should pay someone to wear a metal suit and get “eaten” by this stuff…

You can purchase the magnetic putty here.

The Showreel of Cris Wiegandt

April 23rd, 2013 | Space

Cris Wiegandt is one of our favorite up-and-coming artists. She constructed the incredible Paper Space Shuttle &  Paper Darth Vader Mask, and now she has created a Showreel of all of her work:

A special sort of whimsy permeates through the collection.  Of course, I am a bit partial to the space-related paper crafts, but I truly enjoy the whole lot.

And here’s a GIF of the Paper Space Shuttle I put together from the video.  It would say it’s a graphic metaphor for her career in art.  Enjoy!

“Get Lucky” by Daft Punk (feat. Pharrell Williams)

Daft-Punk-Get-Lucky

The long-awaited release of Daft Punk’s new single, “Get Lucky,” has finally arrived!  The song comes from the band’s 4th album, “Random Access Memories,” which has been in the works for a few years.

When describing the collaboration with Pharrell, Daft Punk proclaimed that he “is a born performer” with a lot of “elegance.

” “[They] wanted to give the impression of being in a capsule in the studio, isolated from the world.”

Creating this new album was apparently a challenge for Daft Punk.  “There was a sense of searching for a record we hadn’t done,” Bangalter said. The breakthrough came when they started experimenting with live musicians and “[recreating] what we used to do with machines and samplers, but with people”. While Daft Punk still use vintage vocoders and a custom modular synth, the record has hardly any samples. “[We tried] to make robotic voices sound the most human they’ve ever sounded, in terms of expressivity and emotion.”

The new tour will officially kick off in a Wee Waa, Australia, a small agricultural town of less than 2000 people.  “The promoters came up with a wonderful idea to show a contrast between a global band and a small community rural township. It’s something that’s quite unexpected,” Narrabri Shire Council Mayor Conrad Bolton told Reuters. I would love to be at that show!

I think “Get Lucky” is pretty good.

It certainly features Pharrell more than Daft Punk, which will irk many of the die-hard fans, but I’m personally ok with it.  At the end of the song, I’m left wanting more DP, which is a good thing.

And yes, I put on my helmet to listen for the first time.

Wringing out Water (In Space)

Wringing-out-Water-In-Space

International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield is renowned for his communication of science. He plays guitar from space, throws up incredible images of Earth from the ISS, and he’ll answer all your curiosities about living in a gravity-free world on YouTube.  This recent demonstration was a result of a question from 2 high school students, Kendra Lemke and Meredith Faulkner, who were interested in what might happen when you wring out water from a washcloth in space.

The result is pretty amazing.  I was worried the water would short-circuit the electronics, but thanks to surface tension, all is well.
