Ivory Coast Song

Sean Pecknold directed this lovely video for the song, “Ivory Coast,” by Pure Bathing Culture. The story features a little blue alien (love child?) being chased by ghostly, holographic sharks. Sound intriguing? 🙂 In the end, it appears, the mother must let her son travel to the stars… where he belongs. Enjoy!

Abandoned Yugoslavian (Alien?) Monuments

January 23rd, 2014 | Robot, Space

Abandoned Soviet Monuments 1 This monument, authored by sculptor Miodrag Živković, commemorates the Battle of Sutjeska, one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the former Yugoslavia.

Antwerp-based photographer Jan Kempenaers traveled throughout former-Yugoslavia to capture thousands of old monuments commemorating the the Second World War. The structures are called “Spomeniks” and were commissioned by former dictator Josep Tito in the 1960s and 1970s.

“Tito couldn’t erect figures or busts in honour of generals because he didn’t want to be seen to be favouring any ethnic group, for example a Bosnian general or a Serb war hero, so instead they made these things that didn’t refer to people,” Kempenaers told The Guardian.

Knin – “This monument is dedicated to the soldiers who freed the city of Knin, Croatia from the fascists during World War II.”

Kadinjača – “The Kadinjača Memorial Complex commemorates those who died during the Battle of Kadinjača.”

The monuments were built using reinforced concrete, steel, and granite, and they feature strong, angular geometry, which gives them an otherworldly look. I wonder if these will be featured in some sort of History Channel Ancient Aliens show in the future…

If you liked these, there’s a book by the photographer on Amazon where you can find a lot more images, here.

Magnetic Putty

When you add small magnetic particles to silly putty, it’s transformed into a metal eating alien life-form. PBS Digital Studios and Shanks FX used the magnetic putty in parts of their recent film short SCI-FLY, and and the shots are pretty fantastic.

They recently released a new video showing the whole process in reverse and it’s really interesting to see how the experience changes.  I’ve been seeing a lot of the video comments describing these videos as a sexual experience, which I think is hilarious.  Maybe there are some silly putty fetishes out there?

Here’s a description of the material that was used in the video:

“Magnetic Attractor Putty is a non-Newtonian solid. This means that while the putty is technically a solid, it exhibits qualities of a liquid as well. Just let your putty sit on a flat surface for a while and you’ll see it spread out like a liquid. The magnetic properties of the Magnetic Attractor Putty come from a magnetic material being mixed in with the putty itself. There are millions of tiny micron-sized magnets embedded in the putty to ensure that it will respond to any large magnet.”

They should pay someone to wear a metal suit and get “eaten” by this stuff…

You can purchase the magnetic putty here.

New Jersey artist Mike Doyle never stopped playing with LEGOs.  He recently spent over 600 hours to assemble 200,000 LEGO pieces into The Contact Series, which was designed to celebrate “spirituality, peaceful ET contact and fantastical worlds.

”  Doyle gets into some pretty heady topics over on his kickstarter page, and here’s a quick glimpse:

This first piece in the series is the Millennial Celebration of the Eternal Choir at K’al, Odan.

“Like Earth, their civilization is young – under two hundred thousand years old. Unlike Earth, their species evolved from mammals that did not have inter species killing. The concept of war and murder remained unknown to this race as a result of these early evolutionary behaviors.

The Ocean covers roughly 71% of the Earth’s surface, yet more than 95% of it remains unexplored! At one time, we believed that all life on Earth was part of a photosynthetic food chain, drawing energy from the sun, but we have since learned that life can appear in some very strange places, even in the deepest crevices of the sea. Reefs are particularly diverse ecosystems hosting over 4,000 species of fish, massive numbers of cnidaria, mollusks, crustacea, and many other animals, and unless you scuba dive, you probably haven’t had the opportunity to see one up close.  They are absolutely incredible.

NYC Tunnels

NYC Tunnels 1

Alien Caverns run deep beneath New York City somewhere near Grand Central Station and Park Avenue.  Patrick Cashin of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority recently captured the NYC Tunnels in the harrowing photographs seen here.

Do they look somewhat familiar?

The NYC Tunnel project was first started back in 2006 but it won’t be completed until 2019.

“The tunnels extend from Sunnyside, Queens, to Grand Central, routing 24 trains per hour at peak capacity. That’s an amazing 162,000 passenger trips to and from Grand Central per day. These images by New Yorks’ Metropolitan Transportation Authority show the progress as of February 12, 2013.”
