Living in the International Space Station

living in the international space station

Sunita Williams guides us through life on the International Space Station in this 30-minute video, which was filmed back in 2012 as part of mission 32/33. It’s really fascinating to observe the adaptations that must be made to live in a gravity-free environment…

The International Space Station at “Night”

International Space Station at night

High resolution.

The International Space Station has been in orbit since November 20th, 1998. That’s almost 17 years! You can tell by all of the old wires jutting out from the walls that some of the tech is pretty old. I find it pretty amazing that we have a permanent human presence in lower Earth orbit.

GoPro in a Water Bubble in Space

GoPro in Water in Space Station

I’m pretty sure I would never get tired of playing around in zero gravity. Here’s another video of the astronauts of the International Space Station testing out a crazy idea…

underwater video in space.

From NASA: “During Expedition 40 in the summer of 2014, NASA astronauts Steve Swanson and Reid Wiseman — along with European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst — explored the phenomenon of water surface tension in microgravity on the International Space Station.

I need to get up there…

“The Space Project” is an incredible series of photographs by Vincent Fournier, who hails from the little known country of Burkina Faso in West Africa. Vincent traveled around the world to capture space training facilities which were left mostly in a state of abandonment. You may have noticed that most countries seem to have shifted their interests away from manned space programs in recent years. After the lunar landing on July 20th, 1969, we just haven’t collectively wanted to exhaust the resources need to journey to Mars and beyond…

These photographs capture some of the beautifully faded glory of space programs around the world. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

ISS Transits the Moon

ISS Moon Transit Detail

Starship Enterprise

Maximilian Teodorescu, from Romania, recently captured this incredible shot of the International Space Station passing across the Moon.

“The ISS passes in front of the face of the moon for just “a fraction of a second” (around 0.6 seconds) as it orbits our planet at 17,000 miles per hour. Teodorescu looked up exact transit times using CalSky and then used his reflexes to nail the shot.” [PetaPixel via Spaceweather] In other words, perfect timing!

What’s really uncanny is how similar it looks to the shape of the Starship Enterprise from Star Trek.  Maybe the government is ahead of schedule on a ship that would cost approximately $468,400,000,000 to build. Hey, that’s only 1/35th of the US National Debt.

Find more from Teodorescu at his blog.

“Space Oddity” from the International Space Station

May 13th, 2013 | Space

Space Oddity from Space

Colonel Chris Hadfield returns from the International Space Station this evening, and he decided to sing one last song before takeoff.  This couldn’t be a more perfect end to an amazing 5 months of science communication from Hadfield.  ‘Space Oddity’, a David Bowie cover, was mixed with the help of staff at the Canadian Space Agency and features a somber piano intro and modified lyrics that reference the Soyuz capsule that will return Hadfield to Earth.  It’s a beautiful video which features a floating guitar, incredible time-lapse shots of Earth, and Hadfield darting around the space station.

The song takes on a new level of meaning when it’s sung in space.  The lyrics just match the situation perfectly!

I hope Commander Hadfield continues to share the beauty of space after his return home.

“We will go to the Moon and we will go to Mars, we will go and see what asteroids and comets are made of,” he told BBC News.

“But we’re not going to do it tomorrow and we’re not going to do it because it titillates the nerve endings we’re going to do it because it’s a natural human progression”.
