Astronaut Paintings by Gregory Manchess

March 20th, 2012 | Space

These astronaut paintings are by Gregory Manchess, a renowned illustrator from Kentucky.  Manchess is an artist whose works combine a love of fine art and science fiction.  Professionally, he has contributed to Time, Atlantic Monthly, spreads for Playboy, Omni, Newsweek, and Smithsonian, and numerous book covers.  I really like these new astronaut paintings he created for a recent personal project. The abstract brush strokes look great contrasted with the eyes piercing through the helmets — pretty powerful stuff.

From the artist:

I’ve started a new series of paintings, just for me. Astronauts, past, present, or future, doesn’t matter. I was intrigued by Scott Carpenter’s face looking out from behind bright reflections bouncing off his face mask [1st painting, above]. And [in the second painting], a shuttle crewman stares with that timeless look.

As a kid, I was always looking skyward, staring out into interstellar space from behind the atmospheric face mask of Earth. I feel a kinship with these explorers. Perhaps it’s the promise of all that discovery.

There’s just something so fascinating about people in space suits.

And I couldn’t agree more.

SOMA – Concept Art by James Jean

SOMA – Mushroom Boss

These illustrations are from James Jean’s mysterious personal project, SOMA.  No one seems to know if they were for a commission or just for fun, but they are pretty amazing.  I hope someone will eventually transform these into a Mega Man-like video game, in which the hero can accumulate more powers as he goes through the game.

I think my favorite is The Molecule, with The Blood a close second.

High Definition Brain Injuries

March 15th, 2012 | Brain

High-definition fiber-tracking map shows a million brain fibers in an uninjured brain.

High Definition Brain Injuries

Unfortunately, injuries to the brain can be incredibly difficult to diagnose and treat.  The nervous system is complex – there are 150,000-180,000 km of myelinated fibers in the brain alone!  However, new high-definition brain imaging (shown above) from a team of radiologists, pychiatrists, and neurosurgeons from the University of Pittsburgh will allow doctors to more easily diagnose and treat these illnesses.

Brain fibers from a patient hurt in an ATV accident – nerve fibers shown intact

Here is an excerpt from Walter Schneider, a psychologist on the team that created the technology in a discussion with Discovery News:

Tracing brain damage is like trying to follow a truck on a highway from a helicopter and losing sight of it every time it encounters an intersection. But the new images can pick out the tracks and show how much function is lost after an injury.

The images are captured using a magnetic resonance imager. By taking many scans and applying a new mathematical model, one can see the actual neural tracks. Ordinary MRI scans are taken from only 51 directions, but the new kind of scanning does it from four times that number.

“This helps answer the question, how big of a hit did you take?” Schneider said. He likened it to an X-ray machine for bone injuries.

While the implications of this new technology are not completely clear, there is hope that it can eventually help diagnose and potentially treat a wide range of brain injuries — PTSD, concussion, brain tumors, and even autism.

The images themselves are pretty amazing even without the context.

Terminator Diagnostics

Cyborg Gif

I can’t say where this Terminator Gif actually came from, but it looks pretty awesome.  Any sort of diagnostic screen/retina display/80’s style color palette is a winner in my mind.

I’m thinking this may be from a video game, but I can’t think of it…

Man’s Best Robot Friend – Welded Sculpture

March 12th, 2012 | Robot

Brian Mock, from Portland, Oregon, is responsible for these welded robot canines.  The sculptures are made from wing nuts, hinges, screws, nails, old electronics, and sheet metal which are meticulously welded into animals.

From the artist:

“I am intrigued by the challenge of creating an entirely unique piece from an eclectic collection of discarded objects. Giving these old, common items a new and extraordinary life as one sculpture is an artistically challenging yet gratifying process.

This type of work is also designed to be highly interactive and prompt viewers to question the reality of what they see.

Audience reactions fuel my motivation.”

I am astounded by the elegant form he is able to achieve from the scrap metal with which he works.  They aren’t clunky at all.  Mock has been visiting scrap yards for the past 10 years to obtain the materials for his sculptures, and they can take up to 3 months to complete.
