March 1st, 2012 | Robot

March 1st (today!) is a very important day for the future of autonomous vehicles.

For the first time ever, these self-driving cars will be able to legally drive in the United States.

A lengthy campaign by Google has led to new provisions in the state of Nevada which allow for a new kind of robot driver’s license.  Yes, you read that correctly, a ROBOT driver’s license!  A red license plate will be the only mark that these cars are not actually being driven by humans.

With over 50,000 lives lost to careless driving in the United States each year, this a huge step to ensuring the safety of people everywhere.  Hopping in your car is probably the most dangerous thing I do every day, so I, personally, welcome this technology with open arms.

I can’t believe the Google car has already logged almost 200,000 miles on the streets without incident.

Robot Quadrotors Perform James Bond Theme

You may have seen the previous video of the Robotic Swarm that I posted a few weeks ago, well the GRASP Lab at UPenn is at it again.  And now the robots play music…

They premiered the James Bond theme song shown above at the TED2012 Conference in Long Beach, California today, and it was a hit.

And as before, these robots are completely autonomous, meaning humans are not controlling them; instead, they run on computer programs designed to play the song.

Dukno Yoon, a metalsmith and jeweler from Kansas creates spectacular rings, bracelets, metronomes, and other machines that mimic the movements of flying birds.  Here’s a statement from the artist:

“The contrast between metal structural form and natural feather, together with the repetitive and whimsical movements of fragile wings, provokes the imagination and evolves the intimate relationship between work and viewer/wearer.”

Yoon has put a LOT of work into creating these designs.  The sheer number of accessories that he’s created is pretty astounding, and you can find all of them here.

Here is a nice example of one of his metronomes:

Snow Surfer

February 26th, 2012 | Space

The video below is from fashion photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton.  The short film was shot with Artec pro snowboarder William Hugheson on the slopes of Tignes in south-eastern France.  The custom LED suit was made by electronics guru John Spatcher, and it is spectacular.

When asked to describe his reason for making the film, Sutton notes:

“I was really drawn to the idea of a lone character made of light surfing through darkness. I’ve always been excited by unusual ways of lighting things, so it seemed like an exciting idea to make the subject of the film the only light source.

The film is haunting.  I like to imagine this is what snowboarding in the future will look like — sculpture in motion.

Air Swimmer Angry Birds

You may have seen the Air Swimmer Shark that I posted a few months back, well, now you have the Air Swimmer Angry Birds.  I never became addicted to the Angry Birds iPhone game as so many of you did, but if you’re a fan, I would recommend making the purchase.  My friend bought the shark, and it’s really fun to play with and incredibly intuitive to fly.

The Angry Bird is about $25, and if it works anything like the shark, it will be worth your money.  You can find it here.
