HIV Model

Ivan Konstantinov and his team created this detailed model of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) back in 2010 by spending 3 months summarizing 100 different publications in fields of virology, X-ray analysis and NMR spectroscopy.  “The depicted spatial configurations of 17 different viral and cellular proteins found in the HIV particle are in strict accordance with known 3D structures. The viral membrane in the model includes 160,000 lipid molecules of 8 different types in the proportion found in the HIV particle.

HIV is certainly one of the scariest disease around, but this model makes it look like a fluffy, harmless ball.

There has certainly been a lot of noise about HIV “cures” in the past few years, and I think Alex Dent put it well when he wrote “Yes, amazing things are happening in science, but the results of studies tend to be amplified as they echo through media outlets.”  As a journalist, I try my best not to exaggerate scientific findings.  Publications write dramatic headlines to draw readers in, but unfortunately, the public doesn’t always get the most grounded information as a result.

Hopefully models like this one will help lead to a real HIV cure sometime in the near future.

Brains Made from Household Objects

Kyle Bean has a way with organizing household items into intriguing designs.  In this recent project for Men’s Health Magazine, he transformed toothpaste, fruit, and newspapers into the undulating gyri and sulci of the brain.  I, of course, appreciate any creative representations of the brain, but I find these particularly well done.

In 1978, Space Invaders ushered in the Golden Age of Arcade Games.  Shortly after its release, you could find coin-operated machines pretty much everywhere — grocery stores, restaurants, bars, movie theaters.  But in the smart phone era, there isn’t much room for this type of gaming.

You can easily pull up Angry Birds, Temple Run, and even Space Invaders on your phone and play them instantly, for free.

So I guess acting on a bit of nostalgia for gaming of the past, I decided to create this replica of the original Space Invaders Arcade Cabinet.  I attempted to keep the design as close as possible to the 1978 U.S. release.

Here’s a summary of the gameplay in case you’re not familiar:

“Space Invaders is a two-dimensional fixed shooter game in which the player controls a laser cannon by moving it horizontally across the bottom of the screen and firing at descending aliens. The aim is to defeat five rows of eleven aliens—some versions feature different numbers—that move horizontally back and forth across the screen as they advance towards the bottom of the screen.

The player defeats an alien, and earns points, by shooting it with the laser cannon.

As more aliens are defeated, the aliens’ movement and the game’s music both speed up. Defeating the aliens brings another wave that is more difficult, a loop which can continue indefinitely.”

Space Invaders was recently chosen by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City as one of 40 that the curators wished to add to the museum’s collection in the future.  This has sparked some debate about whether video games are actually art, and Paola Antonelli, senior curator for the museum’s department of architecture and design, was quoted on the subject:

“Frankly, I am not interested at all in the discussion about video games or even chairs being art. I find design one of the highest form of human creative expression and when something has great design that is more than enough.”

I agree with her.

7 Year Maze

maze-6

For 7 years, a diligent Japanese custodian worked on the maze you see above. Twitter user @Kya7y (and daughter of the artist) found the drawing recently and posted it for the world to see.  Apparently, it was completed almost 30 years ago in his spare time using some pen and ink on A1 size paper (841 x 594 mm).

What is maybe most impressive, however, is that the drawing was made with very little planning.

He simply drew the maze as it popped into his mind.

I hope this is sold as a print some day.

Low-Poly, Isometric Worlds by Tim Reynolds

November 29th, 2012 | Robot, Space

I am very excited to present the Low-Poly work of Timothy J. Reynolds to all of you today.  Tim is a designer and architect who’s currently working full-time in Wisconsin as a 3D illustrator for a large marketing firm.  He’s been commissioned by Popular Mechanics, Nissan, and Apple, but he also has a whole host of really cool individual projects.  I think I must also mention that he has one helluva mustache.

I’ve always been a fan of Low-Poly illustration, but I especially appreciate the crispness of Tim’s designs.  He draws inspiration from a range of topics including machines, landscapes, architecture, and even space.

Abstract Machines

These should be made into real sculptures…

Landscapes

2 things: Low-Poly water looks amazing, and I would love to hack it around on that golf course.

Vehicles

Space-Inspired

I apologize for the load time, but that’s one of the coolest GIFs I’ve ever seen.

As you can tell, Tim has a bright future in design and illustration.

I think his work would look fantastic in an animated film.

 PIXAR should hire him!

If you would like to purchase some prints, head over to his Society6 page.  And, if you’d like to see more designs, go here.

If you’ve been inspired to try your hand at low-poly, Tim recommends Cinema 4D.  I assume there’s a bit of a learning curve, but I think I’m going to give it a try.  I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Travel to Distant Worlds

The illustrations above are by Karl Gilzen from the Russian book, Travel to Distant Worlds.  It was originally published during the late 1950’s, during an era of heightened imagination toward space exploration.

I was drawn to the images because of their gritty, subdued style, which stands apart from many of the vintage space images of the period.

It’s fascinating to look back through the decades to see how we envisioned the future.

I’m sure the authors imagined that Russia would probably have cosmonauts on every planet by now.  Hopefully we can get some of that excitement back!  I’m expecting to live in space at some point in my life…
