The Pilot’s Melancholy

September 19th, 2012 | Space

This series by Dominik Smialowski, titled “The Pilot’s Melancholy,” is quite extraordinary.  The intricate features of the flight suit really stand out against the barren Icelandic terrain.

This has been one of my favorites from The Space Suit of the Week feature over on The Fox is Black.  Good find, Alana Zimmer!

You can find more of the series (and other eery photos) over at Dominik’s website.

Early Photos of Mars from the Curiosity Rover

August 31st, 2012 | Space

And they are pretty amazing!

And maybe the coolest thing I’ve seen come from the Curiosity Rover is this Panorama image of Mars. You really start to feel like you are standing on the Red Planet itself.

Robots In Fashion

Gemma-Booth-Robot-1

These photographs are from London-based fashion photographer Gemma Booth.  She has made quite a name for herself over the past 10 years working for the likes of Japanese Vogue, i-D, Jalouse, Nylon and Lula.

Her photography is inspired by stories, old photos, films, books and exhibitions:

– They can all inspire, but sometimes it just comes from within, from a dream or memory.

The images have a natural warmth due to the soft light that bathes the models, and the design of the robot conjures up memories of youth that add to the nostalgic feel.

I’m not sure what brand she has helped to promote here, but think it was executed very well.

Brian Walker, hailing from Sydney, Australia, is responsible for the photographs shown above.  He created these fantastic plastic robot women that fuse fashion, illustration, and technology.

From H R Wienheimer:

“Brian Walker is a world renowned digital artist, with a playfully kitsch postmodern view on the world at large. View them with a grain of salt in hand ready to rub into your own proverbial visual wound that he taketh pleasure in inflicting”

There’s something quite pleasing about his particular brand of pop-art.  The bright colors and classic models work well with the subjects and themes he presents.

ISS Star Trails

ISS Star Trails 1

These are some pretty awesome time lapse photos taken from the International Space Station by Flight Engineer, Don Pettit.  Here’s an excerpt from the photographer:

“My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image.

To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do.

I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure.

You would think he might be able to get his hands on a long exposure camera, but oh well, these turned out great.
