Dock Ellis No-Hitter

On this day, 43 years ago, Dock Ellis threw a no-hitter on ACID. It’s quite the accomplishment! Only around 300 such feats have ever been pitched since Major League Baseball began recognizing the statistic back in 1876.

No Mas and artist James Blagden stumbled across a four minute interview with radio producers Donnell Alexander and Neille Ilel, which appeared March 29, 2008 on NPR’s Weekend America. They were inspired to create this short animated account of Ellis’ legendary feat as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 12, 1970.

Ever since Compuserve released the GIF format back in 1987, it seemed destined for Internet stardom. The feature of storing multiple images in one file enables the creation of simple animations that can be displayed seamlessly in browsers.

David Szakaly is taking this medium to the “next level” with his series of simple, yet mesmerizing, animations. The designs have a refined aesthetic which sort of sucks the viewer in, and the infinite loops support the feeling.

“Chella Ride” by Dog Blood

March 13th, 2014 | Space

“Chella Ride” is a new track from the group, Dog Blood, a musical collaboration between Skrillex and Boyz Noize. The animated music video really caught my eye. It’s an incredible production by the folks over at Golden Wolf. They implemented multiple techniques such as 3d, 2d, cel animation and live action footage to create a gritty, hard-hitting animation style.

celllayersIf you’re not familiar with it, cel animation is an antique method used by studios before the advent of computer-assisted design.

The technique involves drawing on clear plastic sheets (gets its name from “celluloid” sheets) and then laying these images over a static background drawing.

Adrenaline to the Heart

Adrenaline to Heart_800px

Here’s a short stop-motion animation I put together in honor of this day of love. I hand painted an anatomical heart using water color and highlighted the pericardial fat with oil pastels. The animation is sort of a mixture between Valentine’s Day and Pulp Fiction I suppose! The music is an excerpt from an Otis Redding Song titled “Pain in My Heart.”

Go out and love somebody!

“Process” – A Video Characterizing the Process of Ideation and Creation

January 14th, 2014 | Brain

Process

UPDATE 3/19/2014: The video appears to be back up!

UPDATE 1/27/2014: SORRY, this video appears to have been deleted by the owners…

Check out this visually stunning short which portrays the “process” of ideation and creation. If you’ve ever struggled to find the perfect solution to your creative projects, you might relate to the barrage of incoherent ideas that rise to the surface of your brain.

Watching this felt very familiar, but admittedly, I only feel this way when I am forced to create. A lot of my inspiration comes naturally in the shower or late at night when I’m trying to sleep. However, any sort of deadline will send me into the frantic mental state characterized here.

The video was made by the design team, Pluto, using a combination of RED footage, computer generated images, Mograph, and sound design.

“Somewhere” – An Animated Short from Nicolas Ménard

Somewhere Nicolas Ménard

“Somewhere” is a beautiful new animation from Nicolas Ménard, made as a first year film at the Royal College of Art in London. In the video, the protagonist crash lands his spaceship on an abandoned planet, leaving his severed arm to comfort a lost soul mate.

I really love the teal blue and red color palette of the video. It has a wonderful aesthetic. For more from Nicolas, check out his Vimeo page.
