GoPro in Water in Space Station

I’m pretty sure I would never get tired of playing around in zero gravity. Here’s another video of the astronauts of the International Space Station testing out a crazy idea…

underwater video in space.

From NASA: “During Expedition 40 in the summer of 2014, NASA astronauts Steve Swanson and Reid Wiseman — along with European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst — explored the phenomenon of water surface tension in microgravity on the International Space Station.

The crew “submerged” a sealed GoPro camera into a floating ball of water the size of a softball and recorded the activity with a 3-D camera.”

I need to get up there…

Wringing out Water (In Space)

Wringing-out-Water-In-Space

International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield is renowned for his communication of science. He plays guitar from space, throws up incredible images of Earth from the ISS, and he’ll answer all your curiosities about living in a gravity-free world on YouTube.  This recent demonstration was a result of a question from 2 high school students, Kendra Lemke and Meredith Faulkner, who were interested in what might happen when you wring out water from a washcloth in space.

The result is pretty amazing.  I was worried the water would short-circuit the electronics, but thanks to surface tension, all is well.

I like how a seemingly simple task on Earth becomes fascinating when it happens in Space.

“Our world should be called Water not Earth” – Hector Garrido

As we continue our exploration for water on Mars, I thought it would be nice to share Spanish photographer Hector Garrido’s aerial photographs of the effects of water on Earth.  Most planetary scientists make the claim that liquid water is a necessary component for the creation of life as we know it.  The biochemical reactions that sustain life need a fluid to work, so even ice and water vapor won’t do the trick. In a liquid, molecules can dissolve and necessary chemical reactions can occur.  It is for this reason that NASA searches the vastness of space for evidence of liquid water.

And in regards to these images, Hector Garrido has done an exceptional job capturing the beauty from above.  Oscar Wilde famously wrote “Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life.” The carved out soil from these photographs looks eerily similar to the sulci and gyri of the human brain.  It’s fascinating to see biological patterns mirrored at different levels of life.

All Of The Water On Earth

May 11th, 2012 | Space

The image above represents all of the water on the face of the Earth formed into a Moon-like sphere.  First of all, it looks pretty crazy to see the Earth without the oceans, pretty desolate actually.

And secondly, I expected all of the water to look like a LOT MORE WATER.

Here’s an excerpt from the USGS:

This picture shows the size of a sphere that would contain all of Earth’s water in comparison to the size of the Earth. The blue sphere sitting on the United States, reaching from about Salt Lake City, Utah to Topeka, Kansas, has a diameter of about 860 miles (about 1,385 kilometers) , with a volume of about 332,500,000 cubic miles (1,386,000,000 cubic kilometers).

The sphere includes all the water in the oceans, seas, ice caps, lakes and rivers as well as groundwater, atmospheric water, and even the water in you, your dog, and your tomato plant.

If you’d like to see how this water is distributed, check out the graph below:

I also expected that biological water would take up a bigger piece of the pie.
