Melting Sculpture Illusion by Takeshi Murata

Takeshi Murata recently created this magical melting sphere called the “Melter 3-D”, which was on display in a darkened room at the Ratio 3 gallery as part of the Frieze Art Fair. If you’re unfamiliar… the Frieze Art Fair is one of the biggest contemporary art fairs in the world and takes place in Randall’s Island, Manhattan every year.

But back to this piece of art! How does it work? The “Melter 3-D” is a a zoetrope, a pre-cinematic device that creates an illusion of motion from the rapid succession of static pictures. This 3D version implements a stroboscope, which essentially means that flashing lights are used in to illuminate the sculpture at the appropriate times to create an illusion of movement.

This brings us to one problem with the practicality of this piece of art, discussed by one viewer after seeing the otherworldly sculpture first-hand:

“I saw it at the Frieze, and it was one of my favorite pieces on exhibition. The downside was that the effect requires multiple strobe lights to work.

Trust me when I say that you would not want to be the person next to it for more than a few minutes. After about 30 seconds, most people (myself included) seemed to begin experiencing headaches.

Nonetheless, the illusion is a sight to behold, and I’d happily experience the headache to see this masterpiece in action. Apparently, Murata spent months configuring the design on a computer and then worked with high-quality manufacturing engineers (who had previously worked on Hollywood CGI projects) to create the final product, an alien orb sent here to entertain Earth. What an incredible creation!

Olafur Eliasson – An Exploration of Light , Space, and Reason

Olafur Eliasson 2

Olafur Eliasson is a Danish-Icelandic artist who creates large-scale installations that immerse the viewer in a new sense of space. His artwork often features unconventional geometry, mirrors, and natural elements such as light, water, and stone.

Olafur Eliasson 4

The goal of Eliasson’s artwork is to help us question ideas of indivuality and collectivity, urging us to explore the link between thinking and doing. The experience he creates goes beyond entertainment into the realm of responsibility of action. But, if you don’t feel any of these emotions…

undoubtedly, his work is beautiful.

What I find particularly fascinating is that Eliasson treats his studio like a science lab. He’s even known to bring in actual scientists to advise him on new and ambitious projects. I find this borderline obsessive artistic exploration to be rather inspiring.

The ocean is full of trash. If you don’t believe me, check out this post. Just like Mandy Barker, artist Gilles Cenazandotti was inspired by the mass of ocean debris which affects our habitat. The animal sculptures above (from a project titled “Future Bestiary”) were formed from recycled products found on beaches — plastic bottles, lighters, combs, bags, etc…

Speaking about his work Cenazandotti said:

“Impressed by everything that the Sea, in turn, rejects and transforms, on the beaches I harvest the products derived from petroleum and its industry. The choice of animals that are part of the endangered species completes this process.

In covering these animals with a new skin harvested from the banks of the Sea, I hope to draw attention to this possible metamorphosis – to create a trompe l’oeil of a modified reality.

Abandoned Yugoslavian (Alien?) Monuments

January 23rd, 2014 | Robot, Space

Abandoned Soviet Monuments 1 This monument, authored by sculptor Miodrag Živković, commemorates the Battle of Sutjeska, one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the former Yugoslavia.

Antwerp-based photographer Jan Kempenaers traveled throughout former-Yugoslavia to capture thousands of old monuments commemorating the the Second World War. The structures are called “Spomeniks” and were commissioned by former dictator Josep Tito in the 1960s and 1970s.

“Tito couldn’t erect figures or busts in honour of generals because he didn’t want to be seen to be favouring any ethnic group, for example a Bosnian general or a Serb war hero, so instead they made these things that didn’t refer to people,” Kempenaers told The Guardian.

Knin – “This monument is dedicated to the soldiers who freed the city of Knin, Croatia from the fascists during World War II.”

Kadinjača – “The Kadinjača Memorial Complex commemorates those who died during the Battle of Kadinjača.”

The monuments were built using reinforced concrete, steel, and granite, and they feature strong, angular geometry, which gives them an otherworldly look. I wonder if these will be featured in some sort of History Channel Ancient Aliens show in the future…

If you liked these, there’s a book by the photographer on Amazon where you can find a lot more images, here.

Fan Xiaoyan is a sculptor hailing from Gaomi in the Shandong Province of China.  Her work is a bit jarring to say the least.

According to Fan, the figures are reflective of a “surrealistic virtual world in which men and women are equal… the arrival of a new era, a new kind of human being, a new power, a sensation…”

I, however, don’t feel any equality in these pieces.  The women appear to have been subjugated by some external power, like they’ve been forced into their cyborg transformations…

giving the pieces a sort of Grindhouse quality to them.

Regardless of her intention, the sculptures are certainly striking.
