Rise of the Drones

Rise of the Drones

Missy Cummings recently appeared on The Daily Show with John Stewart to discuss the Rise of the Drones. She is a former fighter pilot and current professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT and has some of the best insight on Drone technology in the world.

Drones like the MQ-1 Predator Drone pictured above have been operational for about 10 years and their Hellfire missiles have killed thousands of insurgents in Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia, Pakistan, and Iraq. Obviously, this technology brings fear into the hearts of the general public, and I think Missy Cummings delivers some salient points on the topic. Drones will only become more and more prevalent both at home and abroad.  They’re cheaper and more reliable than any manned aircraft and they don’t risk the pilot’s life to fly.  The U.S. military now trains more remote pilots than fighter and bomber pilots combined.  The training takes about half as much time and anyone who can play video games can control them reliably.

But drones are not perfect, and 23 civilians were mistakenly killed in Afghanistan back in 2010 in one of the biggest military blunders in quite some time.

And this technology is no secret.  If you’re looking to build your own drone, here are the instructions from DIY Drones.  Please don’t arm yours with a hellfire missile.

The Moon Hoax Debunked

Moon Hoax Debunked

This is one of the clearest examples of a Moon Hoax debunking on the web right now.  Basically, it boils down to limitations of the video technology at the time.

I hope you are not one of the crazies out there that believe in the Moon Hoax, but if you are, it’s time to find a new conspiracy to support.

Moonwalk by Dean Potter

January 20th, 2013 | Space

Dean Potter Moonwalk

Dean Potter is the world-renowned American free climber, alpinist, base jumper, and highliner featured in the video above.  He’s conquered some of the world’s most challenging peaks WITHOUT a rope!  He has speed soloed Half Dome, El Capitan, Cerro Torre, and Fitzroy.

The Moonwalk above is located on a highline at Cathedral Peak, as part of a project for National Geographic called The Man Who Can Fly.

When asked to describe the experience in a recent interview, here’s was Dean had to say:

Did the Moon look like it does in the photo with the naked eye?

Potter: Photographer Mikey Schaefer was taking the photographs from approximately 1.2 miles west of the highline. For him, the moon and myself looked exactly like you see it in this picture. From my vantage point on the summit of the Cathedral Peak, the moon was higher in the sky and it looked as the moon always looks to us mortals on the ground.

Looks like you don’t have any protection.

What would you have done if you had fallen?

Potter : I’ve always been a “free soloist.” Whatever I do, I long to be untethered and free. This desire for freedom goes far beyond the highline to every facet of life. Freedom is our most fundamental right. I am completely confident with my ability to catch the line if I were to fall. I’ve practiced this catch move successfully for the past 19 years.

And here’s a few more photos from the National Geographic episode which aired on Sunday, February 8th, 2013 at 8pm:

Anamorphic Illusions

Anamorphic Illusions

Anamorphic Illusions are distorted projections or perspectives requiring the viewer to occupy a specific vantage point to reconstitute the image.  In other words, you must be looking at the right angle for the optical illusion to work.

You may have seen these on streets around the world like this one or this one, but I’ve personally never seen an illusion quite as real as the video above.  The color, shadow, and texture are all spot on. I had to pause and rewind three times to soak it in.

Here are some illustrations that demonstrate how the illusion is created:

As you saw in the video, it’s necessary to stand at the right angle or you will lose the 3D effect.

I would really like to see one of these in person some day…

Winter Wonderland Multicopter

December 27th, 2012 | Robot

Winter Wonderland Multicopter

I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful holiday season.  I think it’s a perfect time to share this amazing footage shot on a Cinestar Axis 3 Gimbal (with a Sony FS100 camera and 18-55 lens).  The gimbal allowed for the unrestricted 360 capture of the winter wonderland.

The multicopter flies incredibly smooth, even in the snowy conditions, and the slow-motion editing worked perfectly.  This almost makes me wish Texas was cold enough to get snow.

You can purchase the multicopter ready-to-fly for a cool $10,000 if you’ve got the money.  I would most certainly crash this thing the day I bought it.
