“Magma” is a new music video from Dvein, a motion and interactive collaboration between Fernando Dominuez, Teo Guillem, and Carlos Pardo based in Barcelona, Spain. The video is abstract, digital art at its best — a surrealist journey through a deteriorating, mountainous world filled with ghostly faces and swirling streams of liquid paint. Sounds cool, right? Check the video out for yourself above.

From Dvein:

“Besides our commercial activity, Dvein is conceived as a platform based on experimentation. We try to redefine the way of focusing the objectives of every particular project.

We are not afraid of thinking outside the box- as we were not afraid in the past of melting a plastic toy helicopter, directing ants and snails, or building a miniature music festival.

I look forward to seeing more from this group.

“No One Knows Nothing Anymore” from Billy Bragg

May 22nd, 2013 | Brain, Space

No-One-Knows-Nothing-Anymore-Billy-Bragg

Billy Bragg is an English musician with a musical history steeped in political activism.  From the artist: “My theory is this; I’m not a political songwriter. I’m an honest songwriter. I try and write honestly about what I see around me now.”

In other words, he writes songs with meaning.  “No One Knows Nothing Anymore” speaks to the barrage of scientific advancement which doesn’t necessarily bring serenity to our lives.

The Lyrics to “No One Knows Nothing Anymore”

“Deep down in the underground, atoms spinning round and round
Scientists monitor readings
Searching for the Holy Grail, the particle or at least the tale
Of the one who gives the universe its meaning.

But what if there’s nothing, no big answer to find?
What if we’re just passing through time?

No one knows nothing anymore
Nobody really knows the score
Nobody knows anything
Let’s break it down and start again

What happens when the markets drop,
If the numbers really don’t add up?
Everyone seeks the safe haven.
And as they contemplate their ruin,
The self-proclaimed smartest people in the room
Are trying very hard not to sound craven

But what if there’s nothing, no pot of gold to find?
Only the blind leading the blind.

No one knows nothing anymore
Nobody really knows the score
Seems nobody knows anything
Let’s break it down and start again

Let’s stop pretending
We can manage our way out of here.
Let’s stop defending the indefensible.
Let’s stop relying on
The lecturing of the experts
Whose spin just makes our plight incomprehensible.

High up on a mountain top, somebody with a skinhead crop
Is thinking deep thoughts for us all.
Serenity is all around, but if you listen you can hear the sound
Of one head being banged against the wall.

But what if our ancestors had stayed up in the trees
Who’d be sleeping weighed down by these worries?

No one knows nothing anymore
Nobody really knows the score
Since nobody knows anything
Let’s break it down and start again”

‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’ by Tame Impala

November 15th, 2012 | Brain

Tame Impala Video

I’m pretty sure we are witnessing the resurrection of John Lennon in lead singer Kevin Parker from Tame Impala.  “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” is a single off of the band’s new album, Lonersome.  The music is described as psychedelic groove rock, which seems fitting.  And I will tell you, this is NOT one of those record’s with just one good song; the whole thing is fantastic, so I recommend listening to it from start to finish.

Also, the video is one of my favorites of the year (directed by Joe Pelling & Becky Sloan).  It looks like it was made with the Play-Doh color palette, which makes sense considering the video was created entirely with Plasticine collage.

I see bright things in Tame Impala’s future.

Superman & The Mechanical Monsters

October 31st, 2012 | Robot

Mechanical Monsters

Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, this amazing stranger from the Planet Krypton, the Man of Steel, Superman.

I was in sort of a 1940’s cartoon mood this morning, so I give you Superman & the Mechanical Monsters.  The short film was released back on November 28th of 1941, but it looks similar to animation from my childhood.  The Mechanical Monsters was the very first story that featured Clark Kent using a telephone booth to discard his street clothes and change into Superman.  Apparently, this cartoon also influenced scenes from Castle in the Sky (great film!) and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

And while searching around the internet, I stumbled across this Techno music video made by Nick Benidt from footage of the cartoon:

The song here is ‘Nizhny Tagil’, produced by Marek Tejchik from the Berlin-based minimal techno label, FRUCHT.  It has a lot of vintage sounding robot sounds, so I see why Nick chose The Mechanical Monsters for the video.

Here’s Nick’s excerpt:

“The song reminded me of robots, buttons, technological gizmos, etc…so I started thinking about footage I had seen or downloaded over the years. I remembered a special film I’d been saving for the right inspiration. It was a Superman cartoon made in 1941 called ‘The Mechanical Monsters’ In those days TV wasn’t around yet, so people would have seen this 10 minute cartoon before the main attraction in the cinema.”

Alright folks, now go dress up as a robot and scare some people.

Happy Halloween!
