Kilian Eng is a prolific illustrator from Stockholm, Sweden who gained widespread attention recently for his poster designs of Jodorowsky’s Dune documentary and the album cover for the Oblivion soundtrack by M83 (seen above).

Kilian draws inspiration from science fiction of old to create these surreal figures and landscapes. From the artist:

“I like to tell stories in my work and invite people to make up their own stories in response. Even if an image is shown as a single piece and not part of a series, the viewer and I need to be able to fantasize about what might happen before and after the exact moment frozen in the picture.

This creative engagement helps me give substance to the worlds my pictures depict, and lets me create new scenarios.

Super Soaker Illustrations

I recently had an idea to create some illustrations of Super Soaker guns, so I did a little internet search and discovered that a graphic designer from London, Joe Oliver, had the same idea. Maybe I’ll add one to the collection in the near future, but until then, enjoy his terrific “on-going mission to illustrate the all-time greatest Super Soakers.

” I swear I don’t work for Larami or any affiliated distributor of Super Soakers, I just think it’s one of the coolest toys ever created.

Ladies Weapons from Antonio Riello

Ladies Weapons - Nathalie

Ladies Weapons - Turandot

Ladies Weapons -Dolores

Antonio Riello is an eclectic Italian artist who has worked with a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and even video games.  He is responsible for this striking set of designer firearms, which are part of a collection titled “Ladies Weapons.”

I’m imaging some sort of left-wing fashion militia brandishing these guns with style…

And he didn’t stop with machine guns and rocket launchers… he also created these chic handguns:

And some grenades:

Here is the whole collection together (click to zoom):

I like this quote about Antonio’s unique artistic style: “Incorporating the ironic manner of a conceptual charade, Riello manipulates and almost mistreats the images and objects which he invents.”

Today is officially the First Day of Summer!  This incredible Super Soaker collection was acquired by Chris Reid over the years, and it includes 340 Super Soakers overall, including about 240 unique designs.

The Super Soaker was invented by a rocket scientist by the name of Lonnie Johnson in 1980’s.

The story goes that “while in his bathroom, Johnson shot a stream of water across the room using a homemade nozzle connected to the faucet. This simple demonstration of pressurized water propulsion was the catalyst for Johnson’s next big idea and invention- a water gun like no other.”  Johnson licensed his Super Soaker to Larami Corporation, and it went on to sell over 1 billion dollars worth of guns.  Michael Jackson even called it one of his favorite toys!

I hope that Chris Reid invites the neighborhood kids over from time to time to have a battle.  It would be one crazy scene to see that Super Soaker collection in action. Maybe he could bring them to a Summer Camp or something like that… I remember my favorite was always the one with a backpack, so that you never ran out of water.

Weaponized Cyborg Women from Fan Xiaoyan

Weaponized Cyborg Women collage from Fan Xiaoyan.jpg

Fan Xiaoyan is a sculptor hailing from Gaomi in the Shandong Province of China.  Her work is a bit jarring to say the least.

According to Fan, the figures are reflective of a “surrealistic virtual world in which men and women are equal… the arrival of a new era, a new kind of human being, a new power, a sensation…”

I, however, don’t feel any equality in these pieces.  The women appear to have been subjugated by some external power, like they’ve been forced into their cyborg transformations…

giving the pieces a sort of Grindhouse quality to them.

Regardless of her intention, the sculptures are certainly striking.
