Dubai, The Future City

Dubai is Crazy.  Ever since they discovered oil back in 1966, this little city in the desert has transformed into a mecca of extreme engineering.

They have an indoor ski resort (with penguins), man-made islands, underground highways, and even the tallest building in the world.

I recently stumbled across this 360 panoramic site that lets you explore Dubai (and many other great sites) from the air.

They seem to have completely terraformed this place into one of the most high-tech cities in the world.

Ninja Star Supersonic Plane

September 5th, 2012 | Robot, Space

NASA may be most known for its space exploration, but the organization also makes significant contributions to technology back here on Earth.  0,000 was recently awarded to The University of Miami team responsible for the Ninja Star Supersonic plane shown above.

The really interesting thing about the plane is that it can fly in 2 different orientations.  One direction is specifically designed for normal, sub-sonic flight speeds, but with a quick turn of 90 degrees, it can zoom into Supersonic speed without the loud Sonic BOOM.  AND, they say this plane could get you from New York to Tokyo in 4 hours!

You can see the normal, sub-sonic orientation below.

And although the aircraft is officially called the supersonic bi-directional (SBiDir) flying wing (FW), I’ll put my vote in for The Ninja Star when it comes out in about 20 years.

Early Photos of Mars from the Curiosity Rover

August 31st, 2012 | Space

And they are pretty amazing!

And maybe the coolest thing I’ve seen come from the Curiosity Rover is this Panorama image of Mars. You really start to feel like you are standing on the Red Planet itself.

Iron Man 3D Computer Technology Available

August 28th, 2012 | Robot

The time has finally come to control computers just like Tony Stark from Iron Man.  For ~$70, “The Leap” is a mouse, keyboard, and touchscreen all-in-one.

Get it at this link: Leap Motion Control

From the Leap website:

“This isn’t a game system that roughly maps your hand movements.  The Leap technology is 200 times more accurate than anything else on the market — at any price point. Just about the size of a flash drive, the Leap can distinguish your individual fingers and track your movements down to a 1/100th of a millimeter.”

I imagine the software will lag behind the hardware (i.e. kinect), but it will catch up eventually, and we’ll have some very cool applications for this — Iron Man-esque design, gaming, sculpture, robotics, surgery, and more.

Check out this video for some more ideas:

I can’t vouch for the product because I’ve never used it, but you can now Purchase the Leap Technology here:

Curiosity’s Descent onto Mars (in HD)

August 23rd, 2012 | Space

In case you missed it, NASA landed a new rover by the name of Curiosity onto the surface of Mars back on August 6th. Daniel Fitch, of YouTube, recently compiled a set of High-definition images taken by the Mars Descent Imager to make the video seen above.

At first, you see the heat shield being ejected toward the surface.  Once the shield is gone, the rover’s radar is revealed to calculate the right speed and direction of descent which can be controlled with its jetpacks.

Now, we just have to sit back and let the rover roam the Red Planet and try to achieve its 4 goals:

Goal 1: Determine whether life ever arose on Mars

Goal 2: Characterize the climate of Mars

Goal 3: Characterize the geology of Mars

Goal 4: Prepare for human exploration

I’m most excited about Goals 1 & 4.  Send Humans!

‘Feel Flows’ by Slow Magic

August 20th, 2012 | Space

Slow Magic is the neon animal-masked figure above that has an 8-track album by the name of  ▲.  I’m really a big fan of the 80’s synth and choral wailings in ‘Feel Flows’.  It’s my kind of dreamwave music and hopefully, a good song to help wind down your summer.

You can pick up the album from their bandcamp page here.
