Drift Stage 1

90's style video game

Drift Stage is a new racing video game currently being created by 2 guys who were deeply inspired by the the great, Yu Suzuki. Suzuki is the mastermind behind the extremely popular titles, Daytona USA and Super Hang-On. This game looks really beautiful.

From a recent interview with the developers, programmer Chase Pettit and artist Charles Blanchard:

“These days, you typically either get something like Forza Horizon that has one foot in the sim racing world and a learning curve to match or you get something that swings hard in the other direction like Mario Kart 8 that maybe eschews a bit too much depth for the sake of being accessible. There are definitely some amazing games in both of those camps, but I want to give the middle ground some more attention with Drift Stage.”

The super-saturated color palette is pretty perfect for this type of game, and it’s sure to win some nostalgia-driven fans as a result.

Look for a first release on the PC and Mac platforms, but the game is still very early in development, so who knows when it will be released. You can follow the developers’ tumblr page to stay updated.

Command Center

January 30th, 2012 | Space

In the summer of 2005, a group of artists going by the name of OAR gained access to an abandoned electrical substation in Belfast, NI.  The building had once powered the city but had lay dormant for almost 25 years before the artists were allowed entry.

Inside the complex, they found a time capsule.

The style of this place reminds of Wes Anderson’s kind of aesthetic.  I’m a big fan of the retro controls and pale colors.

Please check out LookAtBuilding for more photos and some of the work the artists created during their time there.  They basically moved in over the next few months and created an impressive on-site installation exhibit.

To The Moon

November 24th, 2011 | Space

Above is original photography scanned from ‘To The Moon’, an audio and visual chronology from Time-Life that documents NASA’s Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo projects.  What I think is really amazing about these photos is how they highlight the analog nature of the space program in the 60’s.  With no access to fancy computers or technology, they relied on elaborate test rigs and practical scientific testing to explore space.  I often wonder how they could achieve so much with seemingly meager resources, and today, we are having trouble getting back to the Moon (and Mars seems farther away than ever) with all of our powerful computers and technology… I really hope to see a “To Mars” series sometime in my lifetime.

You can learn more about these pictures and others from this terrific post on Sci-Fi-O-Rama.
