Tears of Steel - Blender Foundation

I’ve been on a bit of a movie kick these past few weeks, and fortunately, I’ve come across some pretty cool stuff.  This is a crowd-funded SciFi short movie called “Tears of Steel” that was created using the 3d open source tool, Blender.  The visual effects are pretty spot on, and the story’s entertaining.

Why We Can’t Walk Straight

September 30th, 2012 | Brain

NPR’s Robert Krulwich reports on why we can’t walk straight.  This video is gorgeous and in case you were curious, the animator, Benjamin Arthur traced each frame of the live video to create the final piece – quite the arduous process, but I think it paid off… So a takeaway from the video, if you ever get lost, remember to look for a fixed point to orient yourself!

‘A Glorious Dawn’ – Carl Sagan ft. Stephen Hawking

September 28th, 2012 | Brain, Space

Good Morning!

This song came out a few years ago from the Symphony of Science group (the same group that brought us ‘The Garden of Your Mind‘), and it is a dandy.  Most of the footage came from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos and Stephen Hawking’s Universe series.

These are 2 great scientists who were tremendously influential in the communication of science, so it’s great to see them remixed together for this video.

Special thanks to reader, Jess Jae, for passing this along!

‘Lazuli’ by Beach House

June 12th, 2012 | Space

This is a new song titled ‘Lazuli’ from the band, Beach House.  The song was recorded down in Tornillo, Texas at the Sonic Ranch (which looks like a pretty awesome studio by the way).  Apparently, they chose to record in West Texas after being captivated by the area while resting there during a tour.

Experience Human Flight

Experience Human Flight

In February of last year, five-time world champion skydivers, Fred Fugen and Vince Reffett, were invited to Melbourne to provide advanced coaching to some of Australia’s leading Skydive talent.  The video above was intended to increase interest in the sport, and it certainly worked for me.  The soundtrack by Alex Khaskin and the slow-motion shots really work together to create a graceful feel for the sport.  I’m not exactly sure how high they jumped from, but those shots showing the curvature of the Earth were amazing.

The video above is the second installment in the series, and it’s equally impressive.  Most of these shots are from the cliffs of Norway, Switzerland, and France.
