Autonomous Cars Are Coming

March 1st, 2012 | Robot

March 1st (today!) is a very important day for the future of autonomous vehicles.  For the first time ever, these self-driving cars will be able to legally drive in the United States.  A lengthy campaign by Google has led to new provisions in the state of Nevada which allow for a new kind of robot driver’s license.  Yes, you read that correctly, a ROBOT driver’s license!  A red license plate will be the only mark that these cars are not actually being driven by humans.

With over 50,000 lives lost to careless driving in the United States each year, this a huge step to ensuring the safety of people everywhere.  Hopping in your car is probably the most dangerous thing I do every day, so I, personally, welcome this technology with open arms.

I can’t believe the Google car has already logged almost 200,000 miles on the streets without incident.

Greatest Toy in the Universe — You Choose the Name

February 21st, 2012 | Robot

Welcome to the official sneak peak of the Greatest Toy in the Universe!  This remote-controlled spider comes complete with armor and multiple weapon attachments.  What I really love about this toy though is the enthusiasm of its creator, Jaimie Mantzel.  From his seven minute video description:

“No one at the stores, or in marketing cares whether or not a toy is awesome. They don’t care if its cheap junk with wheels on it that shouldn’t be there. That’s not their job. Their job is to sell what YOU buy. It took an incredible amount of effort to get something this cool through all the processes.”

He sounds almost manic as he describes the different features of his creation.  You can even play beer pong with this thing…

And if you can think of a great name for the toy, they will send you one for free whenever it comes out.
