The hot air balloon has been carrying humans high into the sky since the first manned flight back in 1783. It’s a whimsical means of transportation that captures the imagination of pilots every year at the Festival Internacional del Globo in León, Guanajuato, Mexico.

The Darth Vader hot air balloon certainly takes the cake in my opinion.

I’d really love to see a semi-transparent version lit up a night… It would be quite the sight!

Can Star Wars be Good Again?

October 6th, 2013 | Space

Star Wars JJ Abrams

Many of you are very familiar with the debacle that landed on the big screen in the form of the recent Star Wars prequels. All you had to see was a CGI Jar Jar Binks to know that the gritty, western space odyssey you knew and loved was long gone.

The ad agency Sincerely Truman created the above video to highlight 4 rules that JJ Abrams should follow in his attempt to resurrect the Star Wars franchise.

To sum up the video, the rules are as follows:

  1. The setting must take place in the frontier. Star Wars is a Sci-Fi Western, and the intrigue lies in the outskirts of the universe.
  2. The future is old — no shiny spaceships, metallic droids, etc.

    It must be gritty.
  3. The Force is mysterious. You don’t need to tell us how it works.

  4. “Star Wars” isn’t cute. This is where I think JJ Abrams will certainly excel.

He turned Star Trek into a violent, cut throat universe and I think he can do the same for Star Wars.

Here’s hoping for the best!

Agan Harahap juxtaposed superheroes with 20th century war photography to create the stunning images you see above. Some may think the photographs are insensitive to the men who lost their lives in battle, but I don’t see it that way. The images are somber and the addition of superheroes and villains doesn’t diminish the inherent brutality of war. The pictures are not “funny,” but rather intriguing, creative…

Anyway, I think they’re excellently manipulated.

A Wookie is a 7-foot-tall beast from the Star Wars Universe. They are renowned for their excellent strength, marksmanship, and loyalty.  A few lesser known facts for the curious: they apparently live for several hundred years and possess retractable claws to help them live in the trees — the natural Wookie habitat.

Mako Miyamoto decided to bring these creatures into the present day with this excellent series of photographs.

Of course, these figures are not true representations of Wookies (they should be hairy all over and much taller), but nonetheless, the images are pretty damn cool.

This new LEGO X-Wing Masterpiece is being unveiled in Times Square today.  It was made from 5,335,200 individual bricks and weighs an astounding 45,980 pounds (20856.2 kg)!  You may be asking yourself how such a creation came to be… Well, 32 “Master Builders” spent 17,336 man-hours in Kladno, Czech Republic constructing the rebel fighter jet — that’s the equivalent of one man spending about 2 years of his life.

The X-Wing breaks the World Record for the largest LEGO model ever built by about 2 million bricks (LEGO robot will not be happy).  The folks at Wired caught up with a team leader, Erik Varszegi:  “My fellow Master Builders and I are always looking for a challenge — and for projects that push our skills to the next level.”  The team chose the X-Wing because it “is one of the most iconic vehicles in the Star Wars universe and the sheer size and scope of the building and engineering challenges was one we couldn’t resist.”

I’m not sure who funded the work, but I’m glad this happened.  Someone should build a giant LEGO Brain to complete the RobotSpaceBrain series!

Darth Vader Helmet – Paper Craft by Cris Wiegandt

Star Wars Paper Craft - Darth Vader Helmet

The uber-talented Cris Wiegandt is at it again.  She recently made this replica Darth Vader helmet out of paper for the Swedish fashion label, Monki.  In case you didn’t catch it, we interviewed Cris back in January after stumbling across her amazing Paper Space Shuttle, and I think she created an equally successful project this time around.  Her colors were picked perfectly, and I especially like the depiction of the whale.  WELL DONE, Cris.

And she also made a short stop-motion video of the construction process featuring music from Wallenberg:

Be sure to head over to Cris’ Behance page and take a look at all that she’s been up to.  I can’t wait to see what she produces next…
