Cave Wingsuit Flying

April 18th, 2013 | Space

Batman-Cave-Wingsuit

A few weeks ago, I posted about an unbelievable urban wingsuit video from Brazil, but this new feat is even more impressive!  The Italian Norwegian Alexander Polli flies through an extremely narrow opening (maybe 10 to 15 ft wide) called “Batman Cave” at 250 km/h..!  The cave is located in the Roca Foradada Mountains in Montserrat, Spain, and it’s a breathtaking location for such an attempt.

I must say that it’s only a matter of time before someone face-plants in the rock, but I suppose we can all enjoy it until then.

What would be the next step in the evolution of this sport?

Smaller openings? Doing it at night? Blindfolded?  Two people at once? A whole line of people?

Alexander was quoted on the experience saying, “I hope this inspires others not only climb over their mountains, but also to fly right through them.

Urban Wingsuit Flying

Urban Wingsuit Flying

This is just incredible. Jokke Sommer & Ludovic Woerth took their extreme sport to a new level recently in Rio de Janeiro.  They went up on Ultralight Planes and at 5:45 in the morning, they jumped into the heart of the city.  My jaw dropped when they approached the opening between the two buildings. Wow! I hope Urban Wingsuit Flying takes off.  I’d like to see more locations, like this one in Dallas:

Here’s a short video of Jokke describing his passion for flying:

Space Jump Video!

October 14th, 2012 | Space

Check out this video of the Record-Breaking Space Jump by Felix Baumgartner.  I watched the whole journey, and it was pretty breathtaking.  I’m proud to be a human today!

Well, I have another Desktop Wallpaper for you.  As you can probably tell, I am pretty excited about the impending skydive from space by extreme sportsman, Felix Baumgartner.  In case you haven’t heard, the adrenaline-fueled Australian will be attempting a record-breaking jump from 120,000 feet.  The current record was set by U.S. Air Force Capt. Joe Kittinger back in 1960 when he jumped from 102,000 feet.

It is important to note that while this mission is being a called “a leap from the edge of space,” space doesn’t really start until about 327,000 feet, so the statement is a bit of a reach.  Nonetheless, this is the first skydive that will break the sound barrier, and the mission will also set marks for longest-duration freefall and highest manned balloon flight.

One of the reasons I think this mission is so interesting is that Baumgartner is basically skydiving in a hightech spacesuit.  It’s pressurized and comes fully equipped with GPS, g-force meters, custom parachute to prevent tail spin, wide angle cameras, and state-of-the-art thermal gear to withstand the subzero temperatures of space. Suits like this will eventually allow us to jump from all the way up to 327,000 feet and beyond.  Maybe one day you’ll even be able to eject from a space station in orbit and safely land back on Earth.

Here is a great photo of the current suit from all angles (click to zoom in):

As of now, the launch is planned for early in the morning this Sunday, about 1 day and 13 hours from now.  You can watch the countdown here.

Let’s hope the weather cooperates.

Experience Human Flight

Experience Human Flight

In February of last year, five-time world champion skydivers, Fred Fugen and Vince Reffett, were invited to Melbourne to provide advanced coaching to some of Australia’s leading Skydive talent.  The video above was intended to increase interest in the sport, and it certainly worked for me.  The soundtrack by Alex Khaskin and the slow-motion shots really work together to create a graceful feel for the sport.  I’m not exactly sure how high they jumped from, but those shots showing the curvature of the Earth were amazing.

The video above is the second installment in the series, and it’s equally impressive.  Most of these shots are from the cliffs of Norway, Switzerland, and France.
