Irving Penn - Small Trades

Today is the birthday of the American portrait photographer, Irving Penn. He would have been 97 years old, but unfortunately, the legend passed away back in 2009. Penn photographed a range of topics, but was mostly known for his still life and portrait work.

When discussing his predilection for animal skulls, he described them as “an exquisite edifice of living machine. Hard chambers of bone to guard soft organs, protected conduits and channels.

Penn mainly used minimalist backdrops, preferring the focus to lie on his subjects. In one series titled, “Small Trades,” he featured workers in uniform with their tools of the trade (seen above). The photo style was achieved by using high speed roll film, to get a particularly grainy effect.

Irving Penn was surely a master at his craft.

Body of Knowledge: A History of Anatomy

March 10th, 2014 | Brain

Giant Skull

A new exhibition on the history of anatomy, Body of Knowledge, opened recently at Harvard and will be on display until December, 2014.

From the Harvard Museum of Science & Culture:

Body of Knowledge” will explore the act of anatomizing not as a process of mapping a finite arrangement of bodily structures, but as a complex social and cultural activity. By means of a diachronic perspective, the exhibit narrative cuts through the multiplicity of anatomical practices, presenting three important moments in the history of anatomy: sixteenth century dissections and anatomical drawings, nineteenth century anatomical practices, and contemporary use of both cadavers and digital technology for anatomic education. “Body of Knowledge” hopes to capture the complexity of the many people, places, and meanings involved in human dissection.

Seen above is Harris P. Mosher lecturing at Harvard Medical School in 1929. The giant skull was made in the 1890s and is a piece in the new exhibit. I’d love to have that on display in my living room!

Ali Gulec 5Ali Gulec is an Istanbul-based artist with a predilection for skulls.  He also runs a design studio called ikiko and his work is all over the Society6 site. I especially like the black-and-white 3D-printed looking “Lace Skull”.

Skull Illustration by Alexis Marcou

Alexis Marcou

These striking illustrations are from Alexis Marcou for a Nike commission back in 2010.

This isn’t the art direction I would normally expect to see from Nike, but I think it’s pretty cool.  The illustrations have tremendous energy established by his use of strong lines and contrast.

Check out more from his site.

Skull Illustration by Alex Konahin

May 3rd, 2012 | Brain

This a new Skull Illustration from Alex Konahin, a master of extremely detailed Pen and Ink drawings.  He created this for a company called Heretic that seems to be a little too Affliction-esque for my liking, but I would certainly wear this shirt with pride.  Apparently, it took him about 2 weeks to complete the work, and I’m guessing he had a few hand cramps along the way.

You also MUST take a look at some of his previous illustrations – really mind-blowing:

This bird is fantastic.
