“Get Lucky” by Daft Punk (feat. Pharrell Williams)

April 21st, 2013 | Robot, Space

Daft-Punk-Get-Lucky

The long-awaited release of Daft Punk’s new single, “Get Lucky,” has finally arrived!  The song comes from the band’s 4th album, “Random Access Memories,” which has been in the works for a few years.

When describing the collaboration with Pharrell, Daft Punk proclaimed that he “is a born performer” with a lot of “elegance.

” “[They] wanted to give the impression of being in a capsule in the studio, isolated from the world.”

Creating this new album was apparently a challenge for Daft Punk.  “There was a sense of searching for a record we hadn’t done,” Bangalter said. The breakthrough came when they started experimenting with live musicians and “[recreating] what we used to do with machines and samplers, but with people”. While Daft Punk still use vintage vocoders and a custom modular synth, the record has hardly any samples. “[We tried] to make robotic voices sound the most human they’ve ever sounded, in terms of expressivity and emotion.”

The new tour will officially kick off in a Wee Waa, Australia, a small agricultural town of less than 2000 people.  “The promoters came up with a wonderful idea to show a contrast between a global band and a small community rural township. It’s something that’s quite unexpected,” Narrabri Shire Council Mayor Conrad Bolton told Reuters. I would love to be at that show!

I think “Get Lucky” is pretty good.

It certainly features Pharrell more than Daft Punk, which will irk many of the die-hard fans, but I’m personally ok with it.  At the end of the song, I’m left wanting more DP, which is a good thing.

And yes, I put on my helmet to listen for the first time.

Justin Bieber Slowed Down

Justin Bieber Slowed Down

I slightly cringe to think of the traffic that google will send to the site as a result of this post, but so be it. This JUSTIN BIEBER song is pretty cool. Hah! Feels strange to type those words…

It’s really surprising how much the tempo can affect a song.  Apparently, this slowed down version served as inspiration for the Slo-Mo narcotic music of the movie, Dredd.  Writer and producer John Garland said that Portishead instrumentalist Geoff Barrow “sent [him] a link to a Justin Bieber song slowed down 800 times and it became this stunning trippy choral music.”

The original Bieber song is called “U Smile” from the 2010 album, My World 2.0.

Happy Valentine’s Day everybody.  I hope you’re finding the love you need.  Here are some tracks from producer and mix-master Giraffage from Alpha Pup Records.   Charlie Yin, a 23 year-old from San Francisco, is the man behind the name.  He has a bright future.

Many think this holiday is about Tracks 1 (Close to Me), 2 (Thinking about you), or maybe 8 (Undress U), but we know it’s all about Track 3 (Money)!

And how about a bonus track to send you out on a swooning note (from Selebrities):

“Expected Closure” from Underwater Orchestra – Album Review

December 4th, 2012 | Robot, Space

Underwater Orchestra

“Expected Closure” is the 12-song debut album from synth pop band, Underwater Orchestra. I first heard the record a few weeks back on Eklektikos, a great radio show hosted by John Aielli on KUT Austin, and I’ve wanted to do a review ever since. Adrian Croom, an artist hailing from Austin, TX, is the force behind the group, which formed back in 2007.  I’ve been a fan of Adrian’s music since his debut album Sub Яosa was released last year and thankfully, “Expected Closure” didn’t disappoint. This time around, Adrian’s exploding synth melodies are backed by live guitar, drums, trumpet, and violin from a slew of talented artists including Jon McMahan (currently on tour with Caspian), Ira Henderson, Gonzalo Hernando, Roberto Riggio, and Isaac Pena.

“Expected Closure” is a journey, or rather a quest, into the world of alien soundscapes, video game synth, and tribal beats, woven together with the warmth of violin and trumpet.  Many vocal-less albums feel monotonic, but this album faces no such fate.  Songs like ‘Proteus’ with its crashing cymbals and uplifting horns could set the stage for even the most heroic cinematic sequences, while the machine-like march of ‘Intrusion’ might be played at The Singularity by our future robot overlords, and I’ve recently been listening to the acoustic guitar riffs of ‘Vacancy’ as a soft, wakeup jam.  I suppose what I’m trying to say is that this is the type of album you hope to find when sifting through the vastness of the electronic music genre – a wonderfully eclectic collection of songs, from start to finish.

I’m hoping to check these guys out in person sometime in the near future.  They play around the Austin area pretty regularly, and I’ve heard rumors they may have an international tour in the works, so stay tuned.

If you’re interested, you can pick up the album here or learn more about Adrian Croom and the rest of Underwater Orchestra here.

Adrian will also be doing an interview with KUT Austin on December 19th at 10AM, and there is a CD release party planned for Saturday, January 19th, at El Sol y La Luna in Austin, TX.

‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’ by Tame Impala

November 15th, 2012 | Brain

Tame Impala Video

I’m pretty sure we are witnessing the resurrection of John Lennon in lead singer Kevin Parker from Tame Impala.  “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” is a single off of the band’s new album, Lonersome.  The music is described as psychedelic groove rock, which seems fitting.  And I will tell you, this is NOT one of those record’s with just one good song; the whole thing is fantastic, so I recommend listening to it from start to finish.

Also, the video is one of my favorites of the year (directed by Joe Pelling & Becky Sloan).  It looks like it was made with the Play-Doh color palette, which makes sense considering the video was created entirely with Plasticine collage.

I see bright things in Tame Impala’s future.

Superman & The Mechanical Monsters

October 31st, 2012 | Robot

Mechanical Monsters

Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, this amazing stranger from the Planet Krypton, the Man of Steel, Superman.

I was in sort of a 1940’s cartoon mood this morning, so I give you Superman & the Mechanical Monsters.  The short film was released back on November 28th of 1941, but it looks similar to animation from my childhood.  The Mechanical Monsters was the very first story that featured Clark Kent using a telephone booth to discard his street clothes and change into Superman.  Apparently, this cartoon also influenced scenes from Castle in the Sky (great film!) and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

And while searching around the internet, I stumbled across this Techno music video made by Nick Benidt from footage of the cartoon:

The song here is ‘Nizhny Tagil’, produced by Marek Tejchik from the Berlin-based minimal techno label, FRUCHT.  It has a lot of vintage sounding robot sounds, so I see why Nick chose The Mechanical Monsters for the video.

Here’s Nick’s excerpt:

“The song reminded me of robots, buttons, technological gizmos, etc…so I started thinking about footage I had seen or downloaded over the years. I remembered a special film I’d been saving for the right inspiration. It was a Superman cartoon made in 1941 called ‘The Mechanical Monsters’ In those days TV wasn’t around yet, so people would have seen this 10 minute cartoon before the main attraction in the cinema.”

Alright folks, now go dress up as a robot and scare some people.

Happy Halloween!
