50 Watts is one of the best vintage design & illustration blogs on the web. Space Teriyaki, a collection of books and catalogs on Japanese illustration and design from the 70’s and 80’s, embodies the brand of intriguing and rare content that Will Schofield has gathered.

I’ve always enjoyed Japanese illustration and have featured the likes of Kazumasa Nagai and Yusaku Kamekura before. The pieces from this era tend to share a boldness in both color and form.

If you’ve enjoyed these, you can find more at 50 Watts.

Kilian Eng is a prolific illustrator from Stockholm, Sweden who gained widespread attention recently for his poster designs of Jodorowsky’s Dune documentary and the album cover for the Oblivion soundtrack by M83 (seen above).

Kilian draws inspiration from science fiction of old to create these surreal figures and landscapes. From the artist:

“I like to tell stories in my work and invite people to make up their own stories in response. Even if an image is shown as a single piece and not part of a series, the viewer and I need to be able to fantasize about what might happen before and after the exact moment frozen in the picture.

This creative engagement helps me give substance to the worlds my pictures depict, and lets me create new scenarios.

Joe Van Wetering is a prominent Chicago-based illustrator who’s worked for Threadless and Armada Ski Company.  I recently stumbled across his eye-catching portfolio, and it’s really great.

 You can find it here.

Here’s a description of his work:

“Inspired by the contrasting visions of pop culture and nature, Joe explores the continuously developing relationship between color and space, creating abstract visions of everyday life through his artwork.”

Many of his illustrations appear to be inspired by space or technology, so if you like RobotSpaceBrain, you’ll probably like his creations.

Super Soaker Illustrations

I recently had an idea to create some illustrations of Super Soaker guns, so I did a little internet search and discovered that a graphic designer from London, Joe Oliver, had the same idea. Maybe I’ll add one to the collection in the near future, but until then, enjoy his terrific “on-going mission to illustrate the all-time greatest Super Soakers.

” I swear I don’t work for Larami or any affiliated distributor of Super Soakers, I just think it’s one of the coolest toys ever created.

Fabergé Fractals from Tom Beddard

Fabergé-Fractals-4

Tom Beddard created these illustrations using his custom WebGL 3D fractal creator.  This form of algorithmic art is created from fractal objects, which are “various extremely irregular curves or shapes for which any suitably chosen part is similar in shape to a given larger or smaller part when magnified or reduced to the same size.

It seems logical that Tom Beddard would enter this form of art, considering he completed a PhD in laser physics before moving into web development and design. From the artist: “I’m interested in how equations and formulas can be used to create interesting, unpredictable imagery.”

From Fast Company: “Beddard doesn’t write the actual mathematical equations himself — for that he goes to the geniuses on FractalForums.com. Instead, he just… explores, using his custom software. ‘You get an intuition about what equations lead to interesting results,’ he says. ‘Everything in ‘Surface Area’ comes from slowly changing just one parameter. And when it moves in and out of phase with some of the other parameters, certain structures pop out: some organic, some geometric, some classical and tree-like.

I think this is about as scientific as art can get…
