Spot – A Robot Dog that Can Take a Kick

February 10th, 2015 | Robot

boston dynamics robot dog spot

Boston Dynamics, previously featured here, is a Google-owned robotics company that just released a new design — Spot, the Robot Dog.

From Boston Dynamics:

“Spot is a four-legged robot designed for indoor and outdoor operation. It is electrically powered and hydraulically actuated. Spot has a sensor head that helps it navigate and negotiate rough terrain. Spot weighs about 160 lbs.”

I actually started to feel some empathy for Spot when he was being kicked by the engineer. It responded in such an organic way… rapidly gaining its balance and then pausing for a moment to digest the assault.

The applications for these machines are seemingly endless. They can carry supplies into dangerous environments (i.e. helping soldiers move equipment), assist the disabled with chores, or simply be a man’s new robot best friend. Exciting times ahead…

“Chella Ride” by Dog Blood

March 13th, 2014 | Space

“Chella Ride” is a new track from the group, Dog Blood, a musical collaboration between Skrillex and Boyz Noize. The animated music video really caught my eye. It’s an incredible production by the folks over at Golden Wolf. They implemented multiple techniques such as 3d, 2d, cel animation and live action footage to create a gritty, hard-hitting animation style.

celllayersIf you’re not familiar with it, cel animation is an antique method used by studios before the advent of computer-assisted design.

The technique involves drawing on clear plastic sheets (gets its name from “celluloid” sheets) and then laying these images over a static background drawing.

Lisa Nilsson has returned for an encore in Paper Anatomy made from the extremely tedious process of Quilling.  I wrote about her work in the past, and here’s an excerpt:

“She created these masterpieces by meticulously rolling and shaping narrow strips of Japanese mulberry paper in a technique called paper filigree or quilling.  As you can imagine, each section takes several weeks to complete.”

This time around she features a canine cut right down the middle.  An interesting note from Lisa’s site is that “The peach-colored shape located where the brain meets the sinuses is the olfactory bulb. This structure is forty times bigger in dogs than in us and enables dogs to sense smell to a degree one hundred thousand to one million times greater than humans.”

The second image is a sagittal view of an angel with an ornate circular background.  It was apparently inspired by Fra Angelico’s Annunciatory Angel (seen below).

And I bet you can’t guess what the last 2 images represent… Praying Hands.  The section passes through the large knuckles at the bases of the thumbs.

It certainly takes a unique personality to have the patience for this kind of work.

Man’s Best Robot Friend – Welded Sculpture

March 12th, 2012 | Robot

Brian Mock, from Portland, Oregon, is responsible for these welded robot canines.  The sculptures are made from wing nuts, hinges, screws, nails, old electronics, and sheet metal which are meticulously welded into animals.

From the artist:

“I am intrigued by the challenge of creating an entirely unique piece from an eclectic collection of discarded objects. Giving these old, common items a new and extraordinary life as one sculpture is an artistically challenging yet gratifying process.

This type of work is also designed to be highly interactive and prompt viewers to question the reality of what they see.

Audience reactions fuel my motivation.”

I am astounded by the elegant form he is able to achieve from the scrap metal with which he works.  They aren’t clunky at all.  Mock has been visiting scrap yards for the past 10 years to obtain the materials for his sculptures, and they can take up to 3 months to complete.
