Insects Computer Parts 6

Julie Alice Chappell, hailing from Portsmouth, UK, creates these intricate insect sculptures from re-purposed computers and video game machines. The parts often come from local dumps, many friends, and organizations that support her work.

Via the artist:

“Whilst watching a nature programme about bio-diversity, one eye on the box of circuit boards, one on the TV, and worrying about my looming major project, I was reminded of the ants in the cupboard and my Eureka moment arrived.

I proceeded to create a museum style entomologist’s cabinet of dioramas, drawers and trays filled with pinned bugs and butterflies. The collection has continued to grow in size and complexity and is constantly evolving as new inspiration is triggered by new finds.”

Black-and-White Vintage NASA Photographs

Vintage NASA Photographs

NASA was officially created on October 1st, 1958 to “provide for research into the problems of flight within and outside the Earth’s atmosphere, and for other purposes.” However, space and aeronautics research was being conducted for several decades before NASA’s inception under the guidance of NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.

The images seen here are just a sample of the gorgeous photographs taken during the infancy of the United States Space Program.

The United States had a clear goal — beat the Russians the Moon — and in 1969, we succeeded. However, I can’t help but feel our space program has been a bit lost ever since…

Russian-based design studio, Kibardindesign, is working on this fascinating Levitating Mouse called “The Bat”.  It works through the power of magnetism.

If you spend countless hours each day at the computer, you might be at risk for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, an extremely painful and annoying condition caused by entrapment of the median nerve at the wrist.  The hope is that the levitating mouse could prevent this condition from ever forming by improving hand posture.

Circuit Mandala by Leonardo Ulian

Leonardo Ulian

Leonardo Ulian, from Gorizia, Italy, is responsible for this intricate Circuit Mandala.  The OCD portion of my brain really appreciates the symmetry he achieved with this piece.  I get the impression that he started with the middle microchip and just worked his way outward.  This thing is about 4ft x 4ft, so it must have taken him quite some time.  This thing really is a masterpiece… The final product appears reminiscent of a spider web.

It’d really be fantastic if the circuit was functional…

…And I guess Leonardo Ulian addresses that here:

“With the Technological Mandala series I combined the suggestive and spiritual meaning of the Indian Mandalas with something that has been perceived as far from that sphere of influence, technology. The search of perfection as necessity within the electronics industry has stimulated my curiosity to produce this series of pieces in order to evocate that specific need. I wanted to show what has been hidden from the eyes of the consumer, representing electronic circuits as extraordinary objects where the perfection of the design can becomes almost something ethereal.

The shapes and colors of the single components intrigued me for pure aesthetic reasons with the consequent loss of the actual functionality of the component itself. My circuits/ Mandalas do not activate lights or do other complicated function, but they simply function as stimulus to produce simple questions like: what will happen if a real electric current flows through the Circuit/Mandala?”

Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure nothing good would come out of this circuit.  However, it would be a nice artistic progression for Ulian to design an aesthetically beautiful circuit that also functions.

Iron Man 3D Computer Technology Available

August 28th, 2012 | Robot

The time has finally come to control computers just like Tony Stark from Iron Man.  For ~$70, “The Leap” is a mouse, keyboard, and touchscreen all-in-one.

Get it at this link: Leap Motion Control

From the Leap website:

“This isn’t a game system that roughly maps your hand movements.  The Leap technology is 200 times more accurate than anything else on the market — at any price point. Just about the size of a flash drive, the Leap can distinguish your individual fingers and track your movements down to a 1/100th of a millimeter.”

I imagine the software will lag behind the hardware (i.e. kinect), but it will catch up eventually, and we’ll have some very cool applications for this — Iron Man-esque design, gaming, sculpture, robotics, surgery, and more.

Check out this video for some more ideas:

I can’t vouch for the product because I’ve never used it, but you can now Purchase the Leap Technology here:
