A Day in the Life of an Earthbound Astronaut

Everyday-Astronaut-header

Check out this awesome series of astronaut photos by Tim Dodd. The life of an earthbound astronaut can be a bit depressing.  Like a snail without its shell, Dodd depicts the everyday life of an astronaut who dreams to be back in space, where he belongs…

and it’s hilarious!

Dodd bought the high altitude Russian spacesuit at the auction site last year and has been working on this project ever since.

“I’d been scheming how to best use the suit,” he writes on his blog. “I have been revisiting my childhood love for space and my obsession was growing stronger and stronger. It was only natural to use this suit to project the inner child in me, still dreaming about space.

“Space Oddity” from the International Space Station

May 13th, 2013 | Space

Space Oddity from Space

Colonel Chris Hadfield returns from the International Space Station this evening, and he decided to sing one last song before takeoff.  This couldn’t be a more perfect end to an amazing 5 months of science communication from Hadfield.  ‘Space Oddity’, a David Bowie cover, was mixed with the help of staff at the Canadian Space Agency and features a somber piano intro and modified lyrics that reference the Soyuz capsule that will return Hadfield to Earth.  It’s a beautiful video which features a floating guitar, incredible time-lapse shots of Earth, and Hadfield darting around the space station.

The song takes on a new level of meaning when it’s sung in space.  The lyrics just match the situation perfectly!

I hope Commander Hadfield continues to share the beauty of space after his return home.

“We will go to the Moon and we will go to Mars, we will go and see what asteroids and comets are made of,” he told BBC News.

“But we’re not going to do it tomorrow and we’re not going to do it because it titillates the nerve endings we’re going to do it because it’s a natural human progression”.

Wringing out Water (In Space)

April 19th, 2013 | Space

Wringing-out-Water-In-Space

International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield is renowned for his communication of science. He plays guitar from space, throws up incredible images of Earth from the ISS, and he’ll answer all your curiosities about living in a gravity-free world on YouTube.  This recent demonstration was a result of a question from 2 high school students, Kendra Lemke and Meredith Faulkner, who were interested in what might happen when you wring out water from a washcloth in space.

The result is pretty amazing.  I was worried the water would short-circuit the electronics, but thanks to surface tension, all is well.

I like how a seemingly simple task on Earth becomes fascinating when it happens in Space.
