Wringing out Water (In Space)

Wringing-out-Water-In-Space

International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield is renowned for his communication of science. He plays guitar from space, throws up incredible images of Earth from the ISS, and he’ll answer all your curiosities about living in a gravity-free world on YouTube.  This recent demonstration was a result of a question from 2 high school students, Kendra Lemke and Meredith Faulkner, who were interested in what might happen when you wring out water from a washcloth in space.

The result is pretty amazing.  I was worried the water would short-circuit the electronics, but thanks to surface tension, all is well.

I like how a seemingly simple task on Earth becomes fascinating when it happens in Space.

Life Unaquatic – 2012 – 12×24 inches – Oil on Canvas

Scott Listfield is an artist from Boston, Mass who created these wonderful paintings featuring a lone astronaut roaming a land of “pop culture icons, corporate logos, and tongue-in-cheek science fiction references.”  The lonely astronaut theme reminded me of work by Dominik Smialowski or Jeremy Geddes, but these are very different, both aesthetically and conceptually.

The astronaut is certainly out of his comfort zone in these paintings.  He’s surrounded by the material world, and even without facial expressions, you get the idea that this Earth is not his home anymore.

Distant Hills by Cole Rise

Photography from Cole Rise

(Click Photo to Enlarge)

I stumbled across the photography of Cole Rise, and I wanted to share this levitating astronaut lady with you.  She appears to be exploring some low-gravity, desert planet.

If you’re interested in making your own levitation photos, I recommend watching this video.  It looks like it takes a higher than average jumping ability to pull it off though.

The Pilot’s Melancholy

September 19th, 2012 | Space

This series by Dominik Smialowski, titled “The Pilot’s Melancholy,” is quite extraordinary.  The intricate features of the flight suit really stand out against the barren Icelandic terrain.

This has been one of my favorites from The Space Suit of the Week feature over on The Fox is Black.  Good find, Alana Zimmer!

You can find more of the series (and other eery photos) over at Dominik’s website.

Animal Astronauts

April 18th, 2012 | Space

My friend Neil (not Armstrong) sent me these fanciful prints of Animal Astronauts by the artist going by the name of Rubbishmonkey.  I think personifying animals is something we can all appreciate.

It’s great to imagine how each of these animals might act in space – which natural animal instincts would carry over.

The Gorilla – Stern and Powerful

The Deer – Smart and Quick

The Cosmonaut K9 – Loyal and Courageous

The Tiger – Cunning and Stealthy

I personally hope the future involves some sort of technology that gives animals human-level intelligence.

Astronaut Paintings by Gregory Manchess

March 20th, 2012 | Space

These astronaut paintings are by Gregory Manchess, a renowned illustrator from Kentucky.  Manchess is an artist whose works combine a love of fine art and science fiction.  Professionally, he has contributed to Time, Atlantic Monthly, spreads for Playboy, Omni, Newsweek, and Smithsonian, and numerous book covers.  I really like these new astronaut paintings he created for a recent personal project. The abstract brush strokes look great contrasted with the eyes piercing through the helmets — pretty powerful stuff.

From the artist:

I’ve started a new series of paintings, just for me. Astronauts, past, present, or future, doesn’t matter. I was intrigued by Scott Carpenter’s face looking out from behind bright reflections bouncing off his face mask [1st painting, above]. And [in the second painting], a shuttle crewman stares with that timeless look.

As a kid, I was always looking skyward, staring out into interstellar space from behind the atmospheric face mask of Earth. I feel a kinship with these explorers. Perhaps it’s the promise of all that discovery.
