Homemade Spacecraft

November 18th, 2011 | Space

This video is from a father and son team called the Brooklyn Space Program.  From their site:

The Brooklyn Space Program is a organization based in New York City dedicated to scientific experiments, engineering, design and education.  Our interest is to inspire others and push the bounds of creativity and innovation.

This is a great example of your average citizen taking space exploration into his own hands!  I was always under the impression that it would be virtually impossible to acquire the resources needed to send a craft into space, but I have been proven wrong.  I hope this kid ends up being the first person on Mars…

The Atomium

November 4th, 2011 | Space

The Atomium is a monument in Brussels, Belgium that was erected in 1958 as a symbol of faith in technical and scientific progress and as an optimistic vision of the future of a modern, new, super-technological world for a better life for mankind.  The Atomium was designed from the body-centered cubic crystal structure of iron (magnified 165 billion times) by engineer André Waterkeyn.

In 1958, humanity aspired to a better future, characterised by harmony, progress and peace. And it was in Brussels, then the young capital of Europe in its infancy , that nations came together to celebrate the dawn of tomorrow’s world.

Escalators are used to travel inside from sphere to sphere, and an impressive panoramic restaurant sits in the highest sphere.

Fabric of the Cosmos

October 30th, 2011 | Space

This video is an interview with Brian Greene from the New York Comic Con convention. He is discussing his new show, “Fabric of the Cosmos”, which will be airing on PBS beginning November 2nd, 2011. There is some rather mind-blowing topics covered in the interview. Some of my favorites: time travel, teleportation, and the structure of the universe.

“What makes me me is not the actual particles that are constituting my bones and my brain and everything else inside of me but rather, [what makes me me is] really the quantum information that those particles contain.” – Brain Greene
