For all your Space needs…

Starfield

March 3rd, 2012 | Space

There have been some really great XBOX Kinect hacks since it was released back in 2010.  The video below demonstrates a space-inspired version from the French design group, lab212.

Kinect has always been very friendly to developers as they’ve pretty much left their source code open for programmers to use.  I’m not sure any of these projects have really taken off yet, but it’s nice to see innovative concepts coming forward.

Snow Surfer

February 26th, 2012 | Space

The video below is from fashion photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton.  The short film was shot with Artec pro snowboarder William Hugheson on the slopes of Tignes in south-eastern France.  The custom LED suit was made by electronics guru John Spatcher, and it is spectacular.

When asked to describe his reason for making the film, Sutton notes:

“I was really drawn to the idea of a lone character made of light surfing through darkness. I’ve always been excited by unusual ways of lighting things, so it seemed like an exciting idea to make the subject of the film the only light source.

The film is haunting.  I like to imagine this is what snowboarding in the future will look like — sculpture in motion.

The Ocean Soup

February 23rd, 2012 | Space

Floating along, hidden beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean, you will find the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a collection of ocean trash measuring about twice the size of France.  The term “Soup” is given to the plastic debris that is suspended in the sea.  Mandy Barker, a photographer from the UK, created this series of collages to represent the global collection of refuse that exists within Earth’s oceans.

Here is a description of her work:

SOUP is a description given to plastic debris suspended in the sea, and with particular reference to the mass accumulation that exists in an area of The North Pacific Ocean known as the Garbage Patch.

The series of images aim to engage with, and stimulate an emotional response in the viewer by combining a contradiction between initial aesthetic attraction and social awareness. The sequence reveals a narrative concerning oceanic plastics from initial attraction and attempted ingestion, to the ultimate death of sea creatures and representing the disturbing statistics of dispersed plastics having no boundaries.

All the plastics photographed have been salvaged from beaches around the world and represent a global collection of debris that has existed for varying amounts of time in the world’s oceans.

These collages are both eerie and beautiful.

It’s as if humans have given birth to some mysterious form of life deep in the ocean waters.  Or maybe, these are photographs from the depths of space — from some newly found galaxy.  But alas, no, we are ultimately only destroying marine environments a little bit more every day…

and Barker’s images are a disturbing reminder — but they are certainly an aesthetically pleasing reminder.

Cosmonaut Couture

February 16th, 2012 | Space

Renowned fashion photographer Arthur Elgort shot these photographs, starring Russian supermodel Natalia Semanova,  for the December 1999 issue of Russian Vogue.  The images are taken in a Cosmonaut Training Center in the town of Star City, and all of the cosmonauts are real.

The shoot took place after the end of the Cold War, but I like to imagine that this is what the secret Soviet Space Program looked like.  It feels like James Bond.

And as one commenter noted:

“If russia used their women instead of weapons during the cold war, we’d all be wearing furry hats right now”

Chinese Space Suit from Wu Ershan

February 10th, 2012 | Space

I came across this space suit on a blog called The Fox Is Black (they run a Space Suit of the Week column which is a must read!), and I knew I had to share.

Wu Ershan is a Chinese artist from Inner Mongolia who created the space suit shown above using white felt and metal inserts.

Description of the artwork from the curator:

The artwork presents part of the project ‘Nomadic Plan in Outer Space’. This artwork is an example of imagining the future, with parallels to the ‘Secret History of the Mongols’ (regarding the birth of Genghis Khan).

This uses the metaphor of the wolf and the deer and the blood clot in Khan’s hand, which can be seen as similar to Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’. Both these visions are drawn from inspired imaginations and non-linear methods of linking the past, future and present times, presenting them as both separate and concurrent, an extension of the spirit influenced by Eastern Buddhism. These can all be seen as the future predictions.

I really like the neutral color palette and the mixture of traditional Mongolian design with futuristic space suits.  It would be interesting if every country had a space program and designed their suits with their respective cultures in mind.

Below you’ll find a few of the suits in action.

And I’m not sure what that horse is doing in space, but I like it.

This has inspired me to try to create my own space suit of sorts.

NASA Weather Modification – With Jeremy Clarkson

February 7th, 2012 | Space

The video above combines two of my favorite things, NASA & Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear.  NASA burns up nearly half a million gallons of fuel to power these solid rocket boosters that provide thrust to send astronauts into space, but first, they need to be tested.  So in the wetlands of Mississippi, they fire these engines off and out comes a rain cloud!

Yes, you are seeing correctly, we can make RAIN FALL FROM THE SKY! And while it may not be the most energy efficient process, I’m still amazed.
