Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera

December 30th, 2011 | Robot

Concerts, Landmarks, Sporting Events… and much much more.  This prototype camera developed by the Computer Graphics Group at Technische University in Berlin is unlike any camera I’ve ever seen.

Upon tossing the ball into the air, the microcontroller inside the device processes data that comes from an accelerometer, which senses the highest point the ball reaches so the ball can take a bunch of photos with its 36 2.o megapixel cameras before falling back down to Earth.  The chassis is built using solid freeform fabrication technology, and the ball appears to have some decent foam padding just in case you happen to drop it on the decent.

I think it would be great if they could mount these cameras in a basketball and get great panoramic shots from the ball during the NBA finals.

Find more detailed information on the specs here.

Neon Surfing

Neon Surfing

Strongbow worked with legendary surfing filmmaker Jack McCoy of Endless Summer II  to capture Australia’s largest glow in the dark surf attempt at Bondi Beach.

The result is pretty amazing.  Neon wire usually makes everything a bit cooler and when you combine it with surfing, you can’t really go wrong…

Check out the El Wire website to trick out your daily activities.

Steampunk Dies a Terrible Death

December 12th, 2011 | Robot

I really like some aspects of the Steampunk style.  If you’re not familiar with Steampunk, here’s an excerpt from Wikipedia:

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1] Steampunk involves a setting where steam power is still widely used—usually Victorian era Britain or “Wild West”-era United States—that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology includes such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or the contemporary authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld and China Mieville.

I had been starting to think that maybe Steampnunk was pretty awesome.  I mean, how can you go wrong when your main inspirations are from the likes of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne… And then I saw this Steampunk Iron Man outfit that someone put together, and I was feeling pretty good about it. I mean, that things looks great!

You can find more of these pictures here at forever geek.

But alas, in the end, Justin Bieber has killed Steampunk.  I don’t want to grant him that power, but there’s no question about it.  Steampunk is Dead.
