Steampunk Dies a Terrible Death

December 12th, 2011 | Robot

I really like some aspects of the Steampunk style.  If you’re not familiar with Steampunk, here’s an excerpt from Wikipedia:

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1] Steampunk involves a setting where steam power is still widely used—usually Victorian era Britain or “Wild West”-era United States—that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology includes such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or the contemporary authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld and China Mieville.

I had been starting to think that maybe Steampnunk was pretty awesome.  I mean, how can you go wrong when your main inspirations are from the likes of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne… And then I saw this Steampunk Iron Man outfit that someone put together, and I was feeling pretty good about it. I mean, that things looks great!

You can find more of these pictures here at forever geek.

But alas, in the end, Justin Bieber has killed Steampunk.  I don’t want to grant him that power, but there’s no question about it.  Steampunk is Dead.

21 Billion Suns :-o

December 11th, 2011 | Space

Our resident ἄστρον ναύτης, Nicolas, wants to make sure that everyone knows about the biggest hole in the Universe that was discovered recently.  It has a mass of 21 billion suns!!   I can’t really wrap my head around that… Researchers believe that giant black holes exist in the center of all galaxies and the bigger the galaxy, the bigger the black hole.  To calculate the weight of the black holes, researchers measure the speed of bright stars moving by them.  As stars travel faster, more gravity is needed to keep them from flying away.

To learn more about the discovery, go here.  And if you help me understand how massive 21 billion suns might be, I’d appreciate it.

Psychedelic Moon

December 7th, 2011 | Space

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has given us the highest resolution images of our great pie in the sky since it launched in 2009, and the image above is no exception.  Apparently, a global map of the moon’s topography at high resolution has not existed until now.

Portraits of the Mind

December 6th, 2011 | Brain

The images above are from Carl Schoonover‘s book, Portraits of the Mind: Visualizing the Brain from Antiquity to the 21st Century.  They may seem like works of abstract art, but in fact, they are real world images used by scientists from around the world to gain a better understanding of the inner-workings of the brain.
