The Ocean Soup

February 23rd, 2012 | Space

Floating along, hidden beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean, you will find the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a collection of ocean trash measuring about twice the size of France.  The term “Soup” is given to the plastic debris that is suspended in the sea.  Mandy Barker, a photographer from the UK, created this series of collages to represent the global collection of refuse that exists within Earth’s oceans.

Here is a description of her work:

SOUP is a description given to plastic debris suspended in the sea, and with particular reference to the mass accumulation that exists in an area of The North Pacific Ocean known as the Garbage Patch.

The series of images aim to engage with, and stimulate an emotional response in the viewer by combining a contradiction between initial aesthetic attraction and social awareness. The sequence reveals a narrative concerning oceanic plastics from initial attraction and attempted ingestion, to the ultimate death of sea creatures and representing the disturbing statistics of dispersed plastics having no boundaries.

All the plastics photographed have been salvaged from beaches around the world and represent a global collection of debris that has existed for varying amounts of time in the world’s oceans.

These collages are both eerie and beautiful.

It’s as if humans have given birth to some mysterious form of life deep in the ocean waters.  Or maybe, these are photographs from the depths of space — from some newly found galaxy.  But alas, no, we are ultimately only destroying marine environments a little bit more every day…

and Barker’s images are a disturbing reminder — but they are certainly an aesthetically pleasing reminder.

Greatest Toy in the Universe — You Choose the Name

February 21st, 2012 | Robot

Welcome to the official sneak peak of the Greatest Toy in the Universe!  This remote-controlled spider comes complete with armor and multiple weapon attachments.  What I really love about this toy though is the enthusiasm of its creator, Jaimie Mantzel.

From his seven minute video description:

“No one at the stores, or in marketing cares whether or not a toy is awesome. They don’t care if its cheap junk with wheels on it that shouldn’t be there. That’s not their job. Their job is to sell what YOU buy.

It took an incredible amount of effort to get something this cool through all the processes.

He sounds almost manic as he describes the different features of his creation.  You can even play beer pong with this thing…

And if you can think of a great name for the toy, they will send you one for free whenever it comes out.

Head & Neck Angiography – A Stereogram

February 19th, 2012 | Brain

How did I not know about this before!  This is amazing, but you have to have some patience!

stereogram is a pair of two-dimensional panels depicting the view of a scene or an object from the vantage points of the right and left eyes.  Basically, if you can train your eyes to look at the images correctly, you can see in 3-dimensions without the need for 3d glasses.

In order to see in 3d, you must follow these instructions very carefully: http://www.2eyephotography.com/

Give it some patience, and you will be able to do it.  It’s kind of like Magic Eye.  The key is to make sure the middle image is the same size as the images on the sides, then just keep focusing back and forth between your pencil and that middle image until you can keep the middle image in focus.  Then voila!  You can see in 3d!

Try not to get frustrated, and take a break if you are getting a headache, but it will be awesome when you can see the depth.

Cosmonaut Couture

February 16th, 2012 | Space

Renowned fashion photographer Arthur Elgort shot these photographs, starring Russian supermodel Natalia Semanova,  for the December 1999 issue of Russian Vogue.  The images are taken in a Cosmonaut Training Center in the town of Star City, and all of the cosmonauts are real.

The shoot took place after the end of the Cold War, but I like to imagine that this is what the secret Soviet Space Program looked like.  It feels like James Bond.

And as one commenter noted:

“If russia used their women instead of weapons during the cold war, we’d all be wearing furry hats right now”

The First Artificial Heart

February 14th, 2012 | Robot

The first artificial heart was implanted by surgeon Denton Cooley on April 4, 1969, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston, TX.  The recipient, Haskell Karp, lived for nearly 3 days with the artificial heart until a real human heart was available for transplant.

The heart is not on display at the National Museum of American History, but Alexis Madrigal, from The Atlantic, gained access the storage closet shown below to get a closer look and snap the photos below.  The heart sits inconspicuously above the original capillary kidney.

The heart really does look like a World War I era gas mask, but it got the job done, and it proved that artificial hearts could be used successfully as a bridge to heart transplant.

The picture shown below is a top-view showing the four major valves: aortic, pulmonary, mitral, and tricuspid.

That day in Houston will no doubt be a pivotal moment in our history toward becoming cyborgs.

Date Night Rube Goldberg

February 13th, 2012 | Robot

The folks at 2dhouse created this impressive machine in honor of Valentine’s Day tomorrow.

I’m a big fan of Rube Goldberg machines and posted one of my favorites a few weeks back here.  I suggest you try something like this for your date.

It should certainly win you some effort points at the very least.  I might set one of these up at my place just in case I ever have someone come over for drinks on a whim.
