Animal Astronauts

April 18th, 2012 | Space

My friend Neil (not Armstrong) sent me these fanciful prints of Animal Astronauts by the artist going by the name of Rubbishmonkey.  I think personifying animals is something we can all appreciate.

It’s great to imagine how each of these animals might act in space – which natural animal instincts would carry over.

The Gorilla – Stern and Powerful

The Deer – Smart and Quick

The Cosmonaut K9 – Loyal and Courageous

The Tiger – Cunning and Stealthy

I personally hope the future involves some sort of technology that gives animals human-level intelligence.

Holographic Tupac at Coachella

April 16th, 2012 | Robot

WOW!  This is a holographic performance by Tupac Shakur at this year’s Coachella music festival!  I first posted about holographic music when I started this site with Hatsune Miku, a holographic Japanese star, and I knew that we would be seeing more of this in the future.  And the future has arrived!  I am really impressed by the realism, and I can’t wait to see future performances from The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain…

The technology uses uncompressed high-definition video that can be projected as holograms or as 3D imagery on building exteriors, interior walls, stage sets and other structures.

Music Awakens The Soul

April 11th, 2012 | Brain

Watch this old man wake up to some of his favorite music.  It’s pretty incredible to see the power of some good tunes.  I’m sure there are some pretty deep neural connections in the brain that can be aroused even in the wake of serious mental deterioration.

The clip is from a new documentary, titled “Alive Inside”, that follows social worker Dan Cohen, executive director of the non-profit Music & Memory, as he brings iPods to a nursing home.

It’s pretty breathtaking, and it surely gives credence to music therapy.

Mars Travel Posters

April 8th, 2012 | Space

Check out these Mars Travel Posters from Ron Guyatt.  They feature 3 landmarks: the Seven Sisters caves on Arsia Mons, the volcano Olympus Mons, and the Valles Marineris.

They are apparently part of a series depicting landmarks in our solar system, so hopefully we’ll get to see some more in the coming months.

The Boy Who Played With Fusion

April 6th, 2012 | Space

Boy Fusion

Read this article on Taylor Wilson, The Boy Who Played With Fusion.  It is awesome!  I have always been a big fan of stories of incredible genious.  I find them inspiring.  They make me want to be a better scientist and do something great some day.

In summary, the article describes Taylor’s story to become the youngest person in the world (age 14) to achieve nuclear fusion.  His parents play an interesting role in this development and certainly exhibit a laissez faire parenting style.  I can’t help but think this could just have easily turned into a national news story of tragedy.

Anyway, hope you like it!
